Interesting or controversial movie characters

I need to watch the movie again soon but when watching Django Unchained, I found the character Stephen very interesting.

He's the loyal head house slave who seems to have a close friendship with Calvin Candie. I read that Stephen apparently viewed himself as second to the white men but above the other slaves which is probably why he takes an immediate dislike for Django, a free man. He is manipulative and conniving and it appears he has a public act as when he is alone with Calvin, he behaves different and shows that he is alot more observant and comfortable than he makes out.

I wonder what was going on with his character and did he have some sort of Stockholm syndrome, maybe it was some kind of coping mechanism or just all he ever really knew to get by in his position or even if he had more power over Calvin than we saw in the movie. He does genuinely seem distraught when Calvin dies.

Any other specific movie characters that you find interesting or controversial or just stand out to you?

Wasn't Stephen just your stereotypical Uncle Tom?

Yea I guess. I just never saw that portrayed in a movie before myself other than, I suppose, the "mammie" in Gone With The Wind but we dont see much of her character and she wasnt portrayed as evil, whereas Stephen's character seems to thrive in his position and it's like he's running the show behind the scenes unbeknownst to anyone. It appears that Calvin Candie is the bad guy (he is a bad guy) but the main antagonist in the movie is Stephen.

I suppose that's why it wasn't important that the lead, Django, was not the one who killed Calvin but it is Django against Stephen in the end of the movie.
