Small bird left behind

HI All. I hope this is the right place to get some advice.

We have had birds coming to nest in our shed for the last 20 years. I think that they are swollows. They come for the summer, have their babies and head off around September.

This year we had a load of them come. There was about 10 nests in the shed and loads of babies born. Around the beginning of Sept all the adults left and they left behind 5 small babies ( they were able to fly but still quite small).

The babies were able to look after themselves and would leave the shed about 7 am and come back at around 6pm. Yesterday only one of them returned. The poor little fella looks so lost and I am worried for him. He left this morning at about 8am and just arrived back about 10 minutes ago.

Will this little guy be able to make the flight by himself? I am wondering what to so. The shed is open because of him and we usually block it up in the winter. I am now waiting until he goes before blocking it up.

Any advice on what will happen if he does not go... will he survive here?

He will go when he's ready, if not nature will take its course and he won't survive the winter.

Is it normal for the adults to leave the young? Seems so cruel but then I guess Nature is cruel! I was wondering should I build him a house or something? I cannot leave the shed open indefinitely and while I could leave the window open he gets all confused if the curtains are open and flys into the window and cannot get out...
The shed is ok open for another week or two so hopefully he will find his way before then!

It's normal and it isn't cruel. You are applying human emotions and feelings to a situation that doesn't warrant it. Don't be afraid to close up the shed at this point. It will be fine.

Ill give it the week and see how it goes. I won't interfere though and will let nature take its course ... and then Ill close up the shed! Its so tiny and cute though and looks lost without its friends!
