Attic vents

I'm looking for an opinion on attic insulation. We need to get our attic insulated and I've got quotes for 12" of earthwool on the floor with a raised floor for storage, all the pipes and tank insulated etc to meet SEAI grant requirements. One thing I just feel uncomfortable about are attic vents. All of the contractors I've gotten quotes from have said I would need to have vents inserted into the attic.

From my reading I understand that this will make my attic a "cold" attic as I get the idea is to keep all the heat in our house to the floors that we live in but there is something uncomfortable about putting vents in my roof. I presume the idea it to have air circulating in the attic space to avoid damp or condensation.

    Q. Will this impact on what I can store in my attic? It will have the usual Xmas tree, suitcases, stuff that should prob go in the bin but I also have it in my head that as our family expands our attic storage might be needed for clothes e.g winter clothes during summer and visa versa.

The other option is to insulate the actual roof of the house e.g with foam but I realise that then the floor of our attic wouldn't be insulated to the same level so our attic will be a "warm" attic. In theory paying to insulate a room that is just used for storage.
    Q. Would this be a better option if we wanted to be able to store things like clothes, Xmas presents etc?

Any opinions on this would be great.

The vents in the attic will facilitate the storage of items. Without them cloths etc up there may grow mildew and mold.

Remember of you make your attic a warm attic then you also pay daily to heat it! And heat rises so it will get heated first!

Thanks for the reply. You are right paying to heat a room to keep a Xmas tree warm etc doesn't seem to make sense. I should just bite the bullet and book in to get it done before it gets really cold.

Have you consider Airtightness? All the insulation in the world won't improve the temperature of there are Airtightness issues.

We've completely done up the rest of our house so I don't think we have any air tightness issues. The attic is pretty much the last insulation thing on the list to do as we've already got internal wall insulation, new windows, new front door, new heating system, new tank and new cylinder.
