Hi, i've seen quite a few cars lately, plain yellow plates with southern reg.

Is there a reason for this?

The thought process is so they don't stand out at a quick glance over the border.

Some people don't understand that anyone wanting to destroy a ROI car will know the format of the plates regardless of reg colour, also the NCT/Tax/Insurance disc on the windscreen is a hint.

at checkpoints? what happens when they're stopped down here?

I've also seen plain white plates, no IRL,etc. Whats the story there, hardly nct compliant?

Our law enforcement officers do not enforce our laws as well as other countries law enforcement officers do. Though I don't know how the PSNI deal with them, as to drive in a foreign country you are required to be road legal in your home country, as they do enforce traffic laws.

Most of the people doing yellow plates, like most people with illegal plates, have a legal set for the NCT.

Ah i see, i'd have better things to do than be changing plates all the time.
Theres a lad out my way drives a passat, he has a job done to the front indicators cos they're permanently lit amber, like side spotlights or something.
    A bit stupid looking.

Yes I had them on my Carina E which was a DL reg, they did look the business at the time. I know lots of ye hate them but I still think some cars look better with a yellow plate.

Hold on - what's the issue with southern regs in the North? If I ever drive to Belfast, say, and spend 1-2 days there, will I have to come back on foot due to scrotes vandalizing cars?

Depending on where you park you might be lucky to walk...:p

Only joking but I wouldn't venture near some places in the North let alone park up, common sense will tell you where not to park.

Unlikely but if the kerbs are painted blue and red I'd seek an alternative parking space.

Lol, get it...should get some "Forza Italia" stickers and flags so, make it clear the only Irish thing about the car is the reg :D

    Pure Donegal spec it is.

Although im assuming that its so Gardai wont give it another look if they see a yellow reg, although 9/10 its on the back of a WV Jetta.

No, it's spotable in any of the border counties, but Donegal happens to have the longest border with NI bar far.

Because from a distance, if you have to travel a lot in the north, your car won't stand out like a sore thumb from a long distance in areas you'd rather it didn't stand out like a sore thumb from a long distance. It was much more essential during the troubles, and a lot less essential now, in fact not really needed at all. Though some boy racers just do it for god's know why.

And how many times has someone been fined €1250 for an illegal number plate?

Clue: it's €2000 for holding a mobile phone.
