Clubhead speed

Not getting my low irons and woods up in the air enough. Weak shots with these clubs around the course which isn't doing anything for my score.

I know I need to increase clubhead speed, just wondering if anyone has some good tips.

    Cheers

any chance you might have a video of your swing ? Could help to narrow it down for us

    Have you tried swinging faster?

The thing to realise is that you need top speed at impact, not before so you don't want to be trying to hammer it from the top of your back swing.

A drill I've seen is turn an iron round and hold it just under the head and make a few practise swings - you want make a swish noise after where the ball would be - this makes you accelerate the club correctly rather than death gripping it and trying to swing too hard from the top of the swing

    No sorry. I'm a technophobe - I don't have a smartphone or anything.

Not often - usually make a complete bags of the shot

It's not an easy thing to do. I've tried with little success.
The general recommendation is overspeed training.

    Check this out for example:

Are you sure your club head speed is an issue ? Has it been measured ?

If you struggle to get low irons and woods airborne from the ground then maybe hybrids are the answer ?

Not had it measured but I know it is weak.

I am determined to hit my 3 iron sweetly, consistently. Love the feeling when I do hit it well.

I hope you mean 3 wood? Trying to hit a 3 iron consistently is very difficult for most average golfers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,102 ✭✭✭Roger Mellie Man on the Telly

No. As stated I'm talking about my 3 iron. My thinking is that if I can hit this consistently I'll be able to hit any club.

    Perhaps I am deluded?

Forget about the 3 iron. Try a 6 or 7 iron

The 3-iron is a law unto itself.

I can hit 5-6-7 irons well 90% of the time. I also need to use my 3 & 4 irons during a round.

Go play junior B hurling for a year or two , i guarantee you will be swinging harder and faster after that :D

    Ah jaysus a 3 iron ?
Unless you have an above average swing speed and are a very good ball striker I wouldn't be going anywhere near it

What handicap are you playing off ?

Twenty four...! I am fairly crap, maybe because I hit too many low irons... I do like the 3 iron though-I use it a lot. Even used a 3 iron blade for many years.

Hybrids were designed for this very purpose - launch higher and more easily. Might be worth a try

Just my 2 cents but you shouldn't be carrying a 3 or 4 iron playing off 24. As BigChap says try out a hybrid and you will not be sorry.

Not going to tell you how to play but I play off 12 and don't carry a 3 or 4 iron for the very reason that they are too hard to hit. Hybrids far more forgiving.

In the same box. Play off 11, and dropped the 3 & 4 from my bag & replaced them with 19 & 23 degree hybrids. I've never looked back, probably 2 clubs in my bag I'm more comfortable with in my hands than almost anything else.

They also give an extra option from the rough. You're very unlikely to hit a decent 3 iron from off the fairway, but a hybrid can get through the heavy stuff.

I know golf purists will say you should be hitting low irons...but screw that, its about scoring, not looking good

It's a bit of a catch 22, your short off the tee so need to hit more long Iron's.
They shouldn't even be in your bag get hybrids.
Don't even think u need 2 get one around 23 degrees choke down to go a bit shorter.
How accurate u expect to be from 3 iron distance?

I kept the 3i from an old set and use it at times as a kind of utility club for keeping the ball low.
