Hi, looking for some advice please.

Looking to get a new car budget 2.5k at a push and 1.4. It's for family of 4. No real experience with buying, still have a 99 Ka which was first car bought from family member about 3 years ago.

Had been looking at corolla/focus or civic hatchback.

Have seen citreon c4, opel astra and peugot 307 coming up on adverts with less years. Are these as reliable as the 3 mention above or are all cars similar in reliability?

And what would be recommended , older car less mileage or newer car more mileage?

    Thanks

Hard to go wrong with a Corolla. C4, 307, etc are cheaper for a good reason, they are nowhere near as robust especially at that age. Mazda 3 or Mitsubishi Lancer would be below a Corolla but still well ahead of the likes of a C4 or 307 imo.

Civics in your price range are usually better equipped than corollas, and more spacious. Parts and insurance are expensive in comparison to a corolla though, and gearboxes are supposed to be a weak point on them according to a regular poster on here.

I'd agree with what bazz says above, but you mightn't find a really nice Corolla in budget, whereas you might with a Mazda 3 or a civic.

Corolla hasnt a timing belt, which is a plus at this price range.

Probably get a much newer Focus for the money than a Corolla or Civic.Much roomier as well.

As a former owner of a MkII Focus I'd have to disagree. Rear legroom on the MkII Focus was pretty tight.

Civic is the roomiest car of them all. The elevated gear stick takes getting used to. But overall a bit of a sleeper when it comes to bulletproof motoring. Have an 03 for just over a year and she's gone through 2 ncts without trouble.

    This too shall pass.
