Have a budget of 7-8k and am considering both, 07 models of each, the e92 bmw. Will probably go auto on both.

Which feels faster? Better to drive?
Anyone owned both or have any experiences with them? Both seem like solid cars, what would you go with and why? Or is there something else I should consider?

Well obviously the GTI will be faster and feel faster so all depends on taste.

Personally I'd go for an e92 msport with some nice extras, try to stretch to a 330i maybe. I think they're gorgeous looking cars.

Test drive both and see which you prefer, both quite different.

Maybe i'm wrong but i don't think you'd find a good example worth owning of either for that budget.

The GTI will be faster and but 'fast' isn't everything, they will both drive and behave very differently and driver their power in different ways.

On a motorway or for engine note/sound it would be hard to look past the BMW on a backroad .. the GTI.

e92 325 coupe common as muck in SE for 07, rare as hens teeth for the msport in that year AFAIK...

I don't think M Sports came out until later; BMW normally wait a while before bringing out that model.

Earliest E92s came out in late 2006, but are very rare. It's best to avoid N53 engined E92s as those engines can be quite troublesome.

325 is 220bhp versus 200 in the GTI.

So when did it stop being the n53 engine?which engine type in the e92 petrol is most reliable?

N53B30 was introduced for MY2008. N53 has a direct fuel injection and can work on very lean mixture. That's why it has so good fuel economy and low CO2 figures.

Unfortunately the E9x did not have a good solid reliable petrol engine...

I thought the e92 petrol was solid. Will look into this further, presumed the e92 would be more reliable than the gti

Everything else is nice in that car - suspension, electrics etc. It is just the engines, that are not as solid - N46B20, N52B25, N52B30, N53B30. Some of the diesels weren't perfect too: N47B20, N57B30...

I would look for 2008 330d with M57D30, but that would be far outside of your budget...

N52s are a very reliable engine, there are one or two issues but nothing major. I think N53s may be alright now, but they gave a lot of trouble with injectors and coil packs originally. I think if it's been verified that the injectors and coil packs have been done, you'll be fine, but I can't say I know a whole pile about the reliability of these engines. I believe N46s are also fine, but I don't think any E92 has that engine, as far as I know all four cylinder petrol E92s use the newer N43 engine and that does give the same sort of problems the N53 gives (or at least used to give). The best BMW engines for reliability were the older six cylinder units; the M20 and M50 were bulletproof, the M52 was also rock solid once they got rid of the Nikasil liners and the M54 is generally a very reliable engine, although some engines can be fond of a drop of oil (usually the M54B22) but most of the time the cause is to do with the positive crankcase ventilation (CCV).

On the diesel side, M57s are very reliable (for a BMW), N57s do have the timing chain problem like the N47, but they are not as prone to it because the six cylinder engine of course is far smoother, in addition most N57s are automatic and for some reason automatics are not as prone to the problem as manuals (don't ask me why that is the case!). Although the 330d switched to the N57 engine when the LCI models were introduced in late 2008, 325d kept the M57 engine until around April 2010, while the 335d only switched to the N57 when the current generation F3X models came out.
