Switching from Virgin, to who?

Due to a house move I'll be moving from Virgin to someone else as Virgin won't be available.

Eir website and customer support tell me that I can get up to 15Mb (boo-urns, I'm coming from 240), but Vodafone tell me the maximum speed I can get is 30Mb.

Is this a case of Vodafone using the theoretically maximum, but unachievable, speed to upsell, or is there actually a difference?

Netflix and IP radio are the workhorses in the house at the moment, am I really going to notice a massive difference in the drop in speed outside of these? We don't do a whole lot of downloading apart from work related stuff, so can live with the slightly slower speeds there, but a son and daughter complaining about their YouTube and Netflix might be a different story altogether.

    Any other suggestions for broadband?

Vodafone piggy back off Eir lines so chances are you will get the exact same service as Eir would give you....

Their reps seem to tell any amount of porkies for the sale so tread carefully OP...

Yeah, I figured they were just taking the maximum potential.

Doesn't seem to be many other options, Imagine LTE not in the area. How do Digiweb provide their 'fibre' product?

Not sure about Digiweb, I'm in rural North Dublin, we only got fibre 3 or 4 years ago, I went with Magnet, had a few horrible teething issues at the start but it seems ironed out and I have no issue with it now....

50mb and my last WiFi speed test was 43 down with a ping of 7, grand for residential bb....

Not sure if they are an option in your area though...

Cheers, I never even thought of Magnet. Their address checker is telling me 'up to 100Mb' is available via fatpipe. How do they provide their broadband? They say a phone line is required, so if it's over the phone line I don't see how they could be faster than Eir?

They're not. At the moment Vodafone, Three and Magnet all use Eirs infrastructure... so they'll only be as fast as the Eir site shows.

    https://www.eir.ie/broadband

Put your landline number or address into that and it'll give you a fairly accurate idea of what you can get.

They list a number of locations here, https://www.magnet.ie/residential/home-broadband/ so as they use Eirs infrastructure I don't know why they limit themselves to that.

There's also this story from 8 years ago listing where you could get their 50Mb broadband, impressive at the time, http://www.yourtechstuff.com/techwire/2008/07/magnets-50mbs-b.html

Anyway, as you say they use Eirs infrastructure, best bet for me to do is ask someone I know who lives in the area what they're getting.

Edit: Spoke with an Eir rep today, seems the local cabinet is now enabled, which tallies with the recent update on the rollout map this week, so I can now expect 30Mb which is a better than 15. This tallies with what both Vodafone and Magnet have told me.

Fair enough considering the distance to the cabinet. Thing is if I look out the back window I can see where the Rural Firbre Route terminates, about 500 ,metres down the road. So close.
