First service of a second hand car

    Service

So when you have purchased a USED car - are you best get it serviced it in the garage you purchased it from (a main dealer but not for the make) or go to a Main Dealer for the make?

    I purchased a Renault Fluence from a Nissan dealer in March 2016 (1ts a 2012 dci)
It now has 138000km on it (was 130k approx. when I got it).

I would normally think that I should get the first service done in the garage of purchase (in this case Nissan), to cover the warranty

    Any comments suggestions?

Moved out from a 2011 thread

It depends if you are worried about FSH from a dealer for resale value.
Even indy mechs can update the service book for you so really it shouldn't be an issue. Having said that you should probably get it serviced from a dealer as long car is in warranty in case there is some issue down the road in a few months.

It's the same engine as used in Nissans so I'd have no issue getting it serviced where you got it.

Being a 2012 it might be out of Renault's Warranty period (think it was 2013 when they brought in the 5 year warranty?)

Is there a warranty period from the garage you purchased it from? If so no harm getting them to service it, otherwise it might be cheaper to get an indy do it.

In 11 and 12 the 5 year warranty was optional, so i'd check with Renault and if it still has warranty, i'd get Renault to service it.

Otherwise, as said, Renault/ Nissan share that 1.5d engine so the people you bought it from should be more than capable of servicing it.

It's due a timing belt next service too. In fact it'd be no harm to do it now.

I had a 2011 fluence from new and it was covered by Renault 5 year unlimited mileage warranty.

I would tend to go to a main dealer for the make for the first service, in case there are any recalls due on it.

Found that out when I bought a Clio 2 years ago, and it just happened the local Renault dealer had a service offer on at the time. A recall was due on the car for a few years, around the bonnet catch.

Glad I got that done - saw a similar Clio a few months on the hard shoulder of the Naas road with the bonnet after blowing onto the windscreen

    Thanks for all the replies

Renault Warranty: Yes its still in warranty until March 2017 (5 year)
Nissan Garage Warranty: They gave twelve months (so that's up to March 2017 as well)
Which warranty takes priority ? (Nissan garage will rely on Renaults?)

Service: Yes it was serviced when I got it - with 2 year NCT (at least I fairly certain - but the manual was not updated (fairly certain its a new replacement manual). I considering getting it serviced Oct/Nov

Clock has 138 km on it (I put up 8k on it since March), but the car is not as smooth as it was 6 months ago (slightly higher revs & a little chuggy while in very slow traffic, but only slightly noticeable (and only by me))

It's a 1.5dci automatic tom tom version - I have to say (for the money) it is a nice car to drive (and in 25 years of driving I never considered a Renault before) I came from a 1.8 petrol auto and fuel economy difference is hard to believe and the road tax is good (first time I paid 12 months in a long time)

Timing Belt: Yes I think I would get it replaced for this next service. I think they are due at the 150k or 5 years (but better safe than sorry)

    Recalls: That's interesting

I would keep it with Renault for servicing until the warranty runs out.

    Thanks

I suppose the best thing to do is get a quote for a full service & timing belt/water pump from a few garages (incl. garage I purchased & a Renault dealer and see what the prices are like) and then decide.

But I do take on the advice of making use of the Renault Warranty before it expires

It's not due a service if it was done 8k ago.

You need to confirm with the garage that it was actually serviced 8k ago, and test all due stuff like fuel filter for example was done.

The service interval on that engine is 15000 klm OR 12 months, which ever occurs sooner. Your car doesn't require a service yet.

Thanks again for the sound advice - all very relevant, factual, practicable and appreciated

    1) Will check with the garage that sold me the car about what was actually serviced and follow on from there.
As Colm mcm has eluded to - it could be a fuel filter issue or a bad fuel issue (which I will have a look at this to put my mind at ease)
The car was "perfect" when I got it and its only in the last 10 days I noticed an issue. it was parked up for 10 days prior to this (holidays). So perhaps a good run along the M6 this weekend might sort out or identify if there is ACTUALLY a problem.

    2) Next Service: As the warranty runs out in March 2017. It probably is prudent to get the next service done a month or two in advance of that date. This will mean that I will have done only about 10-12k (km) on it rather than 15k. But prefer that to a timing belt issue.

Its good to get and the info, experiences and opinions - I will post up how I get on and prices quoted etc

Service interval is 30000 km on the fluence or two years.

    I think it's actually 20k 12 months.

Most dealers seem to push 15k though

It's not 20k, Its definitely 30k, I had a fluence for 5 years and it got serviced 3 times by Renault dealer and it had 115k km on it.

Did you get the timing belt done on it or did you change the car before it was due?

Mine has 138k on it and the warranty runs out in Mar 2017 - so I have to consider getting it done before then anyway.
I got it in Mar 2016 (130k on it), presuming it was fully serviced then (was told it was), so in theory its next service would be due at 160k

But to make use of any Warranty issues, I will need to get it checked & serviced before March 2017 - I reckon it will have 145k km by then. But good to know, that should cover me for the next 20000 - 30000 km

Didn't get timing belt done, wasn't due up to that. Bought it new and traded it in when 5 year warranty was finished on it. To be fair it didn't give me any trouble and was very economical. Best of luck with your car.

    Just checked the Renault fluence

It was serviced at 130k and states next service is 150k or Jan 2017 (So I reckon the garage are presuming a 20000km or 12 month service interval)
I know Renault are advertising 30000km intervals, but 20000km sounds reasonable anyway.

Ok so the time has come Have the car 11 months and getting it in for full service while still in warranty.

Timing Belt & Water pump plus full service
One Renault Garage quoted me €500 for timing belt, €250 for water pump, and €300 for full service plus VAT.
Second garage Belgard - quote €450 for timing belt and water pump and €299 for full service. Still expensive but still €300 cheaper than the first.

Now I know the timing belt + water pump is a once off (well every 150km) - but its going to be a lean month.

    Its a 12 Fluence 145,000 km (90k miles)

    Any alternatives?
