Great Southern Trail

I'll be doing a bit of cycling in the Limerick/Cork/Kerry area in the next while and I came across mention of The Great Southern Trail when I was doing research on it. Never heard of it before to be honest.
I'd be travelling to Tralee via Dromcolliher - Broadford - Abbeyfeale - C'Island, mostly on the N21 i think but I wonder would taking the Great Southern Trail for a few km of it be a good idea for a break? I was thinking of joining it after Templeglantin from Broadford and then on to AbbeyF. I'd probably leave it at that point and go on to Castleisland on the N21.
It'd be great if anyone who has any experience of the Trail has any opinions on that plan. Am I better just sticking with the road?
Also how do you join the trail? Is it visible from the road?
