Hi, I am planning on hiring someone to put up a 40 by 40'foot pen (posts and tornado horse wire) with a divide down the centre and two small gates hung...

    It's on perfectly flat ground...

I am providing all the materials and I was informed it would take a day to put it up...

Was quoted 500 euro for the labour...500 for a day's work . ?? Is this the norm??

It shouldn't really matter how long it takes as long as it's done right. Someone else could be the week slobbering at it. Your lad is probably well organised.

€500 a day wouldn't be the rate for unskilled labour but this sounds like skilled labour and he's pricing the job not charging by the hour.

You are also basically paying hire for a tractor, post driver, wire strainers, drill, a whole host of hand tools, fuel for tractor, insurance, tax, usc, prsi, VAT and lastly a take home wage for the man doing it.

+1000. If you think he's getting the money too handily op do it yourself. What would the company you work for charge to send two men off site for a day c/w €100,000 of equipment required to do their work?

If you think a professional is expensive hire an amateur.

Thanks everyone for the replies especially those that took time to explain the costs involved for a man doing the job..at least now I know it's a genuine quote.

As for those that posted to me in ridicule, bottom line as a middle aged woman, I needed to know if this was a genuine good offer. My intention was certainly not to ruffle feathers, just wanted straight forward advice and this I got.
    Thank you

Our apologies, I'm sure no harm was meant.
