    I want to buy a 2003-2006 Volvo V50 or V70.
What has the best engine either petrol /diesel?
    Thank you.

The best engine depends on what you need from it, ie does your use warrant a diesel over a petrol car? Also the V70 is larger than the V50 but is an older design, do you need the extra space.

    Thanks for that.
concerned more about the sort of engine that's in the 2004/5 V50s.
If I can find out if it's a Volvo engine happy days but I have my doubts.
    Thanks again.

    V50:
The 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines were PSA HDi engines.
The 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol engines were Ford.
The 2.5 turbo petrol engine was Volvo.

All the engines in the 2000 to 2006 V70 were Volvo engines afaik.

I have an 06 v70 2 litre petrol. 240k kms up on it and still sweet as a nut... I've had it for 6 years (highly unusual for me i generally get wander lust after 18 months). Just keep it serviced and replace consumables as required. It can be very thirsty if you have a heavy right foot (I have gotten up to 12l/100km). Though on saying that a recent 2k km holiday around ireland averaged 8 litres per 100km.

I would worry about the the v50 engines.

It's amazing how Volvo are somewhat reluctant to discuss the non- Volvo engines!

    Thank you Bazz.

I have a 1.8F which according to the above would be a Ford engine. Approx. 195k km, 80k of which have been done by me.

New clutch and flywheel at the 150k mark, very occasionally cuts out as I'm slowing down to a stop in a high gear and hit the clutch (possibly a sticky idle control valve), but apart from that it's been a very reliable engine, if not the most refined in the world.

The 2.4 litre D5 in the V70 is a very reliable and smooth diesel engine if you can cope with the higher motor tax.

As above, depends what you need from it. They're all relatively reliable.

The 4 pots diesels are from a PSA/Ford partnership, the 5 pots is Volvo (D5).

If you do the mileage, the 1.6 Drive is the one to have, it's not what you'd call fast but it works well and is nippy enough in a V50 (thanks to its torque) while returning very good mpg.
You'll struggle to find a V50 D5 in ireland, but should find a V70 with it. It's a brilliant engine.

The petrols are Volvo engines, I'd recommend the 1.8 (not the F version), the 1.6 is massively underpowered, the F version require more maintenance and drinks petrol (even more than the non-F version).
If you can source it, the 2.5T (T5) is a brilliant engine, the 2.0 is also to be considered as it would probably be easier on your wallet while delivering decent performance.

I'd be looking for a V50 2.0D. Pretty nippy in that car so much nicer to drive than the 1.6d, without being that much thirstier. Not sure when the 1.6d came in to the line up, but I don't think it was available from launch, so probably not that many 04/05 cars available with the 1.6d.

1.6 Petrol is very underpowered. 1.8 Petrol isn't too bad, but unless it's a lot cheaper or lower mileage than a 2.0D, the diesel is the one to go for.

SE Specification as a minimum - Full Leather, and hopefully the heated seats from the winter pack. I don't think Bluetooth was an option on the V50 of that era, but you'll probably find some sort of aftermarket phone kit fitted to most.

Upon looking it up, the DRIVe was available from 2010, but the standard 1.6d was available from launch.
The 2.0d from Ford (130 hp) was also replaced in 2010 by a Volvo engine (5 pots) marked D3 (150 hp) and D4 (170 hp).

OP, if you're looking for the MK1, as above, the 2.0d is the one to have, the 1.6 without the DRIVe system doesn't really make sense, might as well have the extra oompgh.

    Thank you.

In the model years you're looking at (and as far as I'm aware) yes it is. PSA/Ford to be precise.

I have a 2010 v70 2.5 D5 and it is great! It would pull your house down. I had an older 2001 s80 previously 2.5 D turbo and it was great too, not as powerful as the D5 but never went wrong at all!. I only had to do the usual consumables. After the s80 I went to a tit x mondeo. Only kept that for 1.5 years and then back to the Volvo again Great cars. But Personally I'd steer clear of the PSA diesels. We have a fleet of focus's and they are nothing but trouble. For us anyway.

Don't think I could drive another car other than a Volvo, well at least for family car.

OK, so I did some double checking, here's what came of it:

    Petrol:
1.6: Zetec design from Ford (I'd avoid, underpowered, not that reliable, old design)
1.8/F and 2.0: Duratec HE design engineered by Mazda (I'd have no problem to go for this one).
2.5T (5 cyl): Volvo engines (the best)

    Diesel:
1.6/DRIVe, 2.0 (4cyl): PSA/Ford engine but assembled by Volvo on some models which appear to be more durable than the same engines found in Fords or Peugeots (for exemple: Volvo seem to have used different, more durable, seals)
2.0 (5 cyl), 2.5 (5 cyl): Volvo engines (the best)

I've found these infos on volvo forums mostly, along with some data gathered from reputable websites (honestjohn and the likes). It should be fairly accurate...

An interesting thing to note is that there may be a sacrifice in bootspace on the V50 if you go for a D3 or a D4. I know this is certainly the case on the S40, where the exhaust system eats into it and makes the floor higher.

    Question?
What Volvo engines are in the Volvo Jeeps and how good are they?
    Thank you.
    Mltg.

If by jeeps you mean SUVs then all the engines in the xc90 were made by Volvo. The smaller xc60 had mostly Volvo engines bar the 2.0d which is a PSA HDi engine.

I don't think they ever fitted the psa 2.0d in the XC60. D5 to begin with then DriveE models got the same 2.4 lump with just a single turbo.

I'm fairly sure they were all 5 cylinder Volvo engines until they put the new 2.0d 4 cylinder Volvo engine in them.

Are the 2.0 Diesel in the V50s PSAs?

From a affordable point of view I am looking in year range from 2001 to 2005 for a V70 T 2 to 2.5 dsl.
    Thank you

As already mentioned, yes they are. They only switched to a Volvo engine from about 2011/2012 onwards.

Smallest diesel in those years was the 2.4 D5 engine, so if you want something smaller for tax it's the 2.0T petrol engine.
