It's worth noting that the homocide rate is massively down on what it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. That said there are still a couple of hundred mass shootings every year. I don't people realise the level of gun crime in the States. You're just hearing more of these stories now.

The state with the lowest number of gun murders php is Vermont, which apparently has pretty much the most relaxed gun laws. It is also a state of intellectual 'lefties' with a liberal approach to life.

America is a violent place, irrespective of guns.

Always has been... probably always will be.

But if you removed all guns tomorrow, there is no question that homicide rates would drop dramatically. It's simple: guns are a highly effective and efficient killing instrument.

With less efficient killing tools, homicides are more difficult to commit. Hence less likely to occur.

The culture of violence needs to be tackled. But guns are making their evil deeds so very very easy to carry out!

Very strange shooting. Guy goes into a mall, shoots some women, leaves. Not a typical spree shooter.

For perspective, though, if you go to the CNN website at this time of posting, the secondary link on the left is the shooting. The headline story is "Drugs now kill more in the US than cars and guns." Cars are higher than guns.
