I am asking this on behalf of a friend, he has been living at home in a no name lil town. He never learnt to drive because his family are broke, literally no transport, even the rural transport bus is one town over. He cannot get a job there and with no money he cannot get out of this situation.
What can I suggest to help him get out of the poverty trap? He is only job seekers allowance with €100 a week. Can he get accommodation somewhere and then find a job? We are each others only friends so there is no chance of asking someone to stay over for a while.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If he's getting €100 a week, it would suggest that he is in his early twenties and single. That means he would be way down the list for public housing. He could try and rent privately and may qualify for rent allowance. He should talk to his local Community Welfare Officer about that option.

IMHO, he should fill out a housing application form. The main factors as regards when an applicant gets housed are housing need and the length of time they've waited. So filling out a form gets his need assessed and gets his name on the waiting list. Worth doing, I think. And he can't even apply for rent allowance without having had his housing need assessed.

Depending on what his interests and aptitudes are, he might like to consider an apprenticeship or even joining uo. He could talk to Intreo about his options.
