Yes I agree, bonkers.ie are a good comparison site. I change providers each year in order to avail of the annual discounts but I would like to advise likewise minded people to be careful about the date of changing providers as I have been charged a cancellation fee of €50 by Energia (my old provider) because I moved my account after 363 days instead of 365 days. Technically correct, but petty in my view. :(

You have a 'cooling off' period with the new provider so you could change back for the few days and then switch again.

Unfortunately, I didn't check my closing account (as I had assumed my changing date was correct) and that option was not possible. As they say 'Once bitten, twice shy!

I'm paying 25 euro a month for a supply on an out farm that I barely use. (1 unit last month). Main cost is this 'low usage charge'. Its only used to power a water pump but the stock seem to prefer drinking from the bog pools. Am seriously thinking of dropping it and setting up solar/wind power....

    same story here

got access to the overflow of a neighbours well and stuck in 300mtrs of 1/2" hosing to bring gravity flow - had to put 2 bigger drink troughs as it's slow but was able to disconnect the power then

25 a month is a rob just for water

Well, its mainly that I have no idea why it keeps going up in price. It was less than half the price ten years ago when it was installed. General inflation has only been circa 2% a year since then.

The electrical companies don't like to inform people that the average wage of the ESB monpoly in Ireland is €90k PLUS benefits per annum. The minimum usage charge was brought in as a subsidy to support this gravy train.
Look for another alternative unless you are happy supporting the shenanigans above - there is options out there with some research.
