Hi anybody any recommendations for where to stay in Cape Town. Heading there in Feb for 14 days plan on doing couple days out in the winelands too. Hotels are mad expensive so was looking at the airbnb option however so many to choose from.

I see there are lodges also but haven't a clue where to start.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I stayed in the Protea Hotel in Stellenbosch, about 45km from Cape Town. The hotel is in a small business park on the outskirts of the city, but the views towards the vineyards amazing and it doesn't feel all that much like a business park hotel. We booked on Expedia and I don't recall that it was very expensive even though the company paid.

The closest vineyard is a mile or two away - we visited three or four one Saturday and they were all were delicious.

If you're doing Stellenbosch and the vineyards, you'll obviously need a car. And a designated driver :)

I am going over on Thursday, staying in Breakwater Lodge, which is the cheapest hotel in and around the V&A Waterfront. It is an old converted prison and was recommended it by a couple of people who have visited Cape Town.

Around 100 euro a night for a two person with a breakfast buffet.

Will gladly update you when I am back if you remind me.

Thanks Fin, looks great however budget is rather tight since I am going for 2 weeks and don't want to spend my bollix on the accommodation alone.

Go with an airbnb apartment then. Should get one cheap enough.

Lads/Ladies heads wrecked on trying to sort out an internary. 14 days in SA, will be renting a car. Thinking 4 days in Cape Town then heading out the garden route and do a loop and end back up in Cape Town. Any good suggestions on where to overnight on the route?

    Cheers

Just back from South Africa for the first time. Wouldn't bother staying in Cape Town other than for a night for the experience. Stellenbosch would be a good hub and probably cheaper, Somerset West ditto, Llandudno if you were splashing out :-). Wine, beer and food are silly cheap so weigh that against the accommodation. Driving is very easy, same side of the road and similar rules. Tip well, 5 rand is 33c :-)

Knysna is worth stopping in. You can spend the day on a boat out in the lagoon. Plettenburg Bay is worth stopping in too, if for no other reason than to go to Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary.

Going in Feb so that's out would love to otherwise.

Defo going to stop in Knysna, see good things online. Is it worth going as far as Port Elizabeth and trying to get a game park in??

We were in that part of the world for our honeymoon two years ago, I can recommend (can’t link yet but they should be easy to find:

Franschhoek: Beautiful little town with a “Wine Tram” tour that goes around a selection of local vineyards. Handy because you don’t need to worry about a designated driver. We stayed at the Maison Chablis guesthouse which I would definitely recommend. It’s a quiet place but restaurants and bars are a short walk away.

Knysna – I loved Knysna, lots to see and do around it. We stayed at the Double Dutch guesthouse, run by two Dutch women who were brilliant for recommendations.

Addo Elephant National Park – Just northeast of Port Elizabeth, this is the closest national park / safari experience to the Garden Route. I’m told that it isn’t a patch on Kruger or some of the parks further north but we got a bungalow with a view of a waterhole, and watched families of elephants over breakfast every morning. Even managed to see lions, even though there are less than 10 in the park (they were only recently introduced to control the warthog population). I thought it was well worth it.

If you do go as far as Port Elizabeth/Addo, you should drive back to Cape Town along the inland route across the Klein Karoo via Oudtshoorn. Beautiful countryside.

In Cape Town itself we stayed at the Commodore Hotel. It’s a pretty bland hotel that you could probably find everywhere, but it has underground parking and is only a short walk to the V&A Waterfront
