Lost Vehicle Registration Certificate. Who do I ring?

    Hi there,

Have to bring the car to NCT but I've lost the Vehicle Registration Certificate. I found the file online to request a replacement document.

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF134_en.pdf

BUT, I have changed address since I first bought the car. So I dont know whether to put the old address on the RF134 form, as I'm worried that it would then be SENT to the old address. Or should I put my new address on the RF134 form, and then possibly somebody in the office will say "he's put the wrong address on the form so we cant issue a new Vehicle Registration Certificate". Anybody know who I can call about this?

I called the local tax office but it's just an "our opening hours are" message on repeat.

    thanks,

Don't worry about nct, just tell them you wait for a replacement. Make sure to bring driving license with you.

Not sure about how to change address in this case, but you can do it online when taxing the car, and then you can fill in forms and wait for replacement.

On a side note you might want to make sure to change registered keeper address sooner rather than later (unpaid tolls or fines etc).

Hey Wonski, thanks for your response.
I've gone through some threads here are some people said that the NCT centre refused to carry out the NCT when they had forgotten to bring the Vehicle Registration Certificate. I'm not sure if there's a hard and fixed rule on this, but it is on my list of stuff to bring with me when I'm bringing in the car.

They won't refuse, but might hold onto the cert until you present it.

Just tell them you are waiting for it to be delivered and in 99% of cases you will be fine.

They never asked me for one, actually :)

They've changed the requirement to have the VRC present. But you do need a form of ID.

To get a replacement, email them (motortax@dttas.ie), then reply to the generic email with exact details, it'll then be assigned to a real person. They'll post you out any forms needed. Complete them, send back & they'll issue a replacement cert. (I've had to do it last year).

Don't think they will do anything over the phone but worth a try.

Apply using that form you've downloaded to your local MTO using your current address (i.e. where you want to have the VRC sent to). There's a fee of €12 which isn't mentioned on the form but should be included.

    Hi redfacedbear,

That's what I was going to do, but I was thinking that they would look up the records, see that the address was different from what was on the original Vehicle Registration Certificate, and refuse to issue the new VRC because of that discrepancy.

Oh and can anybody make head nor tail of this question.. "has been lost, destroyed, stolen or". Am I meant to write "lost" in the box, or is the box just for situations where it is something or than when the document has been "lost, destroyed, stolen"? Very confusing.

I think you're overthinking this Peter :pac:

They want to know where to send the new VRC - they are not trying to trip you up - include a note explaining that you have moved since last time if you want but if the reg and your name match they will understand what you are at.

You can leave that part blank unless something other than the VRC being lost, stolen, destroyed has happened to it (e.g. - never received in the post, accidentally posted to a friend in a birthday card, handed to a potential buyer etc).

Yeah I probably am overthinking, I just want to get it right.
Let me fire it off today and I'll see how it goes.

If requesting a new log book with a different address you need an RF134 plus proof of new address and of course €12.
Go into your local mto or post it to your local office.
Takes about a week to get it delivered from time of processing.

Thanks for that tatranska, I would not have done that bit. I have it signed from the local Garda, so nearly there.

Okay, just for anybody else who follows along this path.

    - Print out the RF134 form and fill it in.
    - Get it signed by a guard.
    - Go down to the local tax office, give them the form and 12 euro.
    - They will send it out to you within five days.

note: it turns out that the right address WAS on their computer system, so there was no need for the change of address. I really have no idea how this was updated as I'm certain that the old Vehicle Registration Certificate would have been sent to my old address.

    thanks.

Did you at any time do your tax online and update the address?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,869 ✭✭✭PeterTheNinth

Yeah, I would have changed the address on the online tax form. And I would have changed the address on the license, as I only got my new one recently.
On a side note you might want to make sure to change registered keeper address sooner rather than later (unpaid tolls or fines etc).
^ I actually woke up Saturday night in a panic. Somewhere in the background my subconscious had been processing this and worked out that I could have a stack of fines sent to my old address. So that had me worried all weekend. You see I had been temporarily minding another house so I was travelling back and forth. But it was costing too much in fuel so I just moved to the other house and forgot about changing the address.

You changed it online so it was registered where it should be anyway.

And maybe, just maybe you should slow down a bit :D

About 5 working days would be the norm this time of the year.

We normally say 7-10 but could be quicker.

Thanks. I posted the form in today. Do you think I would have a new by Friday 9 December. I could pick it up if that would help.

They get posted from Shannon. Give your local motor tax office a ring on Monday to see if it's issued.
    They can check the system.

They will do the test but in some centres may not give you the cert until you present the vrc.

    Hi

Hope someone can clarify something for me.
I forgot when I paid my tax online previously that I used the address I was renting at, I have since returned home to the original address I registered my car at and need to get a new VRC as I’ve lost the original.

What will the motor tax office look for along with the RF134 Form?

    Thanks
