Considering buying an opel astra 2013 SE, 90,000km. Any known problems with astra's I should know about? Considering the milage is high(ish) could this be trouble in a couple of years time? I've never owned an Opel so any advice would be great. Thanks

Which engine? Petrol or diesel? 90k km is about 56k miles which is low enough for a soon to be 4 year old car. Main issue I've heard of is with the gearbox on some of the diesel models which is a common problem across similar Opels.

Hi Bazz26, thanks for your reply. It is a diesel engine, 1.3. It will mainly be used for city driving, apart from 1-2 up the country per month. I'd possibly only hit 10,000km per year.. would this be a problem?

I don't see any advantages you will get with a diesel doing mostly city driving to be honest. Diesels take longer to warm up than petrol engines so doing stop/start city driving will not return superior to petrol mpg as the diesel will not warm up to run at optimal efficiency. Also a 2013 diesel car will be fitted with a DPF which won't like the short city driving either and could potentially cause you grief long term.

Why not consider a hybrid like a Prius or Auris, they will give you the benefits of diesel fuel economy in the city while still being ultra reliable. Will also still return good fuel economy on long runs too so win\win.

Might want to check your auto correct before posting. I thought by the thread title you were worried you were buying a car from a smoker.

    This too shall pass.
