Coin Valuation / Sale

My mam picked up two coins in a charity shop a few years back. She thinks she paid 50 cent for the two of them.

I've done a little bit of research and as far as I can tell they are both Victorian Gold Sovereigns from 1850 and 1883, the latter of which was minted in Melbourne.

The valuations I've found online range from a few hundred pounds sterling to €1800 with the older coin consistently valuing a lot higher.

They're very bright and look to be in quite good condition (although clearly I'm completely ignorant of the the applicable grading criteria).

Anyway, the intention is to sell them as soon as possible. My mother is not overly sentimental when it comes to Victorian coinage and feels that the money would be better spent on something more contemporary, like divorcing my father.

She wants me to take care of it as quickly as possible, so what's my next step? I assume I can get them valued professionally in Ireland. But what then? I couldn't be bothered trying to sell them online, etc. Are there antique/pawn-shop type stores in Ireland where I can go in and quickly get 65-70% of what they're worth?

    Thanks.

no, sell peer to peer; you get 30-40% from a shop

Yep, she think its was SVP but isn't quite sure. There's a few of those shops she frequents. She normally just pops in for DVDs and stuff for the grandkids but one day those two coins caught her eye.

30-40% doesn't sound great, notwithstanding the fact they they only cost her 50 cent. We're not a wealthy family and even €1K would go a long way in my house if we managed to squeeze that much from it.

So let's say I go the peer to peer route. Do I have them authenticated in some way first, or simply go on eBay with some hi-res images and wait for somebody to bite?

You should get around 260 Euro each for them IF they are genuine and if they are full Sovereigns and not half Sovereigns, just be aware that there are many gold plated copies around. Maybe bring them into a jeweler first to see if they are solid gold, then sell them to a coin dealer for their bullion value, not one of those 'we buy gold' places.

Whytes had somein their auction this weekend past and there are some in O'Reillys on Wednesday 21. Whytes sold for 200+ (less fees). Both auctioneers will value and are , IMO, reliable. O'Reillys do monthly auctions as do Weldons.
