It depends what you mean by Smart Meter. You can have an Electricity Day / Night meter installed by calling ESB Networks. They will come out and change your meter. You can then change to Day / Night rate tarifs from your electricity supplier, which works out cheaper if you use more than about 40% of your electricity at night (e.g. dishwasher, washing machine, electric car if you have one). ESB Networks quote that there is a charge for having the meter changed, but they didn't charge me anything so perhaps they just publish that to discourage people.
As for an export meter which tracks power you send back to the grid, I'm not sure. Perhaps someone who installed a wind turbine under the ESB Feed in Tariff Pilot Program, which is now closed, could tell you.

I gave a new electricity meter to one of our engineers to test at home and he really likes it. Try smappee.com and I believe they do gas meters as well but it's through an optical or mag sensor so not sure if it's approved or capable of fitting on gas meters. May need to confirm its acceptable with gas networks Ireland for safety reasons

Could always ask your energy supplier and see if they have any deals or offers going

Smart meter usually means one provided by the energy company that gives readings back to them and to you. You cant get one of those in Ireland. ESB did run a trial a few years ago where a select few got smart meters for a pilot project but its long since finished. Maybe they will roll out smart meters in the future.

If you just want basic usage stats (i.e. energy monitor) there are loads of clip on type meters that you can get for small money. Airtricity were giving them out for free at one stage when you switch to them. It might be worth your while asking your provider if they can provide a clip on energy monitor (e.g. efergy.com)

I prefer the backward spinners. They're just so retro...whistling.gif

Looks expensive for a simple enough energy monitor?

The free ones from the electric providers use the same technology (clip ons) and provide the same data except they dont have the app/internet piece.

I dont think I'd pay $240 dollars for the ability to remotely monitor.

The main benefit of these monitors is to see when the energy is being used and then help you isolate and reduce those items. You cant really do that when you are out and about so the only benefit I see to having the app/internet piece is to be able to look at instantaneous values when you are not in the house.... and what use is that really?!

Are there some other benefits in there that justify $239?

I use an Owl Intuition electricity monitor to monitor our house's electricity usage in real time, and to view historic usage over the last few months via the internet. It plugs into the wifi router and sends the data directly to the internet. I find it very good. The one I have is this one which also monitors a Soalr PV array, costing about 80. The OWL Intuition-E is the version without PV monitoring, is about 70.

You can't read generation with just one CT. The CT is not directional it'll read export as positive. The only way to do it is import delta export.
I'm not really a fan of CTs they're not especially accurate on the low end.
