    http://www.movistar.es/particulares/internet/adsl-fibra-optica/fibra-optica-100mb/

MoviStar, the consumer brand name of Telefonica, is now offering 300 Mibts/sec down and 30 Mbits/sec up internet + 500 mins of phone calls per month for EUR 26,90/month.

Or you can have symmetric broadband 300 Mibts/sec up and 300 down for EUR 31,90.

Eir, Virgin & Co are offering an inferior service and a high price to victims of their duopoly by comparison. And both of them are largely misusing the "fiber"/"fibre" word in their marketing materials.

The price is actually a bit higher with the Google translate showing "Touted Price: 26.9 € / month for 12 months (not including line fee € 17.40 / month)".

Then again, €44.30/month is very good value for a proper FTTH 300Mbps link, considering it includes an unlimited call package with 550 minutes to mobiles.

The equivalent with Eir is 85 euros, I think we can only dream of having prices such as that. We are slowly but surely getting better internet in Ireland but I don't think we'll ever see cheap fiber/broadband.

To be fair, Virgin do 360/36 for around €50 or something.

The OP just comes here to complain and moan about how much better Germany/the continent is. Its not a real thread.

But it is a real thread!! Once again Paddy gets screwed. Don't we deserve to see what the prices are elsewhere? Without know what the prices are outside of Ireland, no one would know if we were getting ripped off, but a rule of thumb, if you're buying anything in Ireland, you are probably getting ripped off!

    Thanks OP!

I actually have this service in my Spanish apartment, but 30/30 delivered by FTTH. I can't remember what we pay, but I think it's something like 35pm. I actually don't need faster over there. We have an intel compute stick hooked up to our flat screen tv with wireless keyboard / mouse for the odd bit of plex streaming. It's extremely reliable with amazing ping. I couldn't even justify a fiver more for 300 x 30 or 300 x 300 for now...

Whilst having FTTH is amazing. I was more amazed by the fact that I ordered it one evening at 5pm and had the engineer at the door at 9am...the next day. No BS.

Spain is quickly converting it's entire telephone network to FTTH by 2020.They already had 10 million homes connected to FTTH by end of last year. Let's hope Eir can copy the momentum that's been happening over in Spain.

Isn't peering in Spain one of the worst in Europe? the average wage is also only 1300 a month

is that not a 3 month offer? it's normally 62/70 euros per month for Eir Fibre.

Lets see, looking at that page, that is an introductory offer, it goes up to €41 after 12 months and it doesn't include the line rental of €17.50!

So the real price is €58.50 for 300/30 + unlimited landline calls + 550 minutes mobile. I'm not impressed at all!

By comparison I'm paying Virgin €50 for 240/24 + unlimited landline + unlimited mobile calls.

Virgin also offer 360/36 + unlimited mobile calls for €60 (€2 more, but faster speeds and unlimited mobile calls).

All those prices seem to be right around the true cost of this Movistar deal, in fact I think the Virgin deals are better value.

And you have to take into account that average wages in Spain are much lower then Ireland. So taking this into account, it actually works out much more expensive for the average Spaniard then Virgin does for the average Irish.

I think it is actually quiet poor of Movistar/Telefonica to have a FTTH service capable of 1Gb/s and not offer 1Gb/s as at least an option. At least Eir and Siro offer 1Gb/s as an option on their FTTH services. Looks like Telefonica are worse then Eir, afraid to offer something too good that might take from expensive business class lines.

While we still have a way to go in Ireland, things really have massively improved for most and are about equal to most European countries and in fact ahead of many.

I pay €59.63 per month for 6Mb/s ...... and had to demand a high profile to get that, as was previously getting 4Mb/s ...... from eir/eircom.

And so would people pay similar for similar speeds in rural Spain.

Unfortunately the price you pay has mostly no relationship with the speed you get. The cost for Eir to install a 100Mb/s line and a 6Mb/s line is almost exactly the same. The difference in speed is down to the reality that DSL is highly effected by distance and thus the further you are from the exchange/cab, the lower the speed you get.

Fortunately the NBP should sort people like you and hopefully give you all 1Gb/s FTTH.

Yes I am aware of the reasons, I posted because cowboyBuilder did not appear to believe the other poster.

Hopefully I will get fibre here in the next couple of years and relieve the terrible situation of price Vs speed.
