Expected labour time/cost for replacing clutch and DMF on a petrol Jaguar X-Type

Can anyone in the trade or familiar with the above tell me how much should I expect to pay for replacing clutch and dual mass flywheels on a 2.1 Petrol Jag X-Type (04). I believe it is pretty much the same as Mondeos of the same era and not dissimilar to Transits.

Weighing options of going with supply and fit, or ordering parts from UK and getting local mechanic to fit.

The car is quite old now and worth very little as they suffered huge depreciation. Would you just not put the cost of the parts towards an upgrade?

Why would you do that? If the car has been reliable up to that point and needs those parts to get it back to 100% then you'd be mad to go and spend thousands on a car you've no idea about just to save 1k in repairs.
Besides how do you know how old the x-type the OP has is?

Because the 2.1l V6 is based on the Ford Duratec 20 and is one of the most solid battleships of engines ever built. Plus, the X is simply a nice car. OP, I had a clutch rebuild done on a '99 S-Type 3.0 at 130,000 miles, and attempts to cobble one up from Transit parts came to naught. I ended up getting a kit from Jaguar for €600 and the entire job cost just under a grand. Well worth it. What mileage have you up?

If the Jag is the same a Mondeo diesels of that Era, it's a labour intensive job. I know the Ford clutch parts were fairly reasonable, but the whole front sub frame needed to be dropped to access the clutch, so ended up being over €1,000 of a job due to the labour times involved.

Yeah, clutch / DMF take time to replace. For what's worth (different brand and different layout), it cost just above 1200 Euro on my 159 - and that is with a reconditioned flywheel, rather than a brand new one.

    Thanks guys.
Yes as someone mentioned, the car has had it's depreciation, and is worth very little. But it is working perfectly fine for me and doesn't even REALLY need the clutch right now, just wondering if/when it ends it...
It is the nicest car I've ever driven (after a few Mercs and Saabs) and is working perfectly and has just passed NCT without any issues. Mileage? Haha, are you sitting? 310,000km! And still going beautifully, smoothly and strongly, with no issues or niggles!

Clutch is not that expensive actually. I've got 2 quotes for the full job (clutch kit supply + fit) from clutch specialists: both 500 euros (including VAT) which is good I think. Was wondering if I could even go cheaper if I sourced parts and got local mechanic to do it.

    An upgrade to WHAT, exactly?

It's working perfectly for me, and even if I get a couple of grands for it I can't think of a single car in that range that would be nicer, smoother and more reliable than my current car!

You could pick up a decent 07 new model mondeo for 2 500. I'd imagine a 2.1 petrol loves the juice. Nobody wants these cars nowadays.

You don't want these cars nowadays. A Duratec 20 is a mighty engine - silent, effective and surprisingly frugal. As opposed to some wretched bloody thng that sounds like a TVO 20 and makes you want to claw your eyeballs out every time you drive it.

    Isn't the 2.1 AWD?

Edit, nah that's the 2.5 I'm thinking of,

I had this done recently on my 05 2.0 diesel xtype.

I bought a Luk DMF kit with the clutch from the UK, through a link sourced from the Jag forums. The seller was getting rave reviews and it cost nearly 400 less than the exact same part in Ireland. This included shipping. PM me if you want this :)

I got a local mechanic to fit it, and it took him about a day. Said the thing wad a b@st@rd to fit.

I looked into the single flywheel conversion, but felt it wasn't worth it because it changes the way the car drives.

Must say I side on the OP with this one, keep the car, I adore mine and have it over two years now.

    Jesus.

I wouldn't consider that an upgrade in any dept unless the OP is an obese chap who'd appreciate the massive interior.

Me neither, you can't beat leather interior, walnut dash and a very comfortable driving experience. Plus its a Jag, yeah might have a mondeo engine, but I must say I enjoy people asking me why I drive a Jag. Its funny.

Like the posters above, I would consider an 07 Mondeo a considerable DOWNgrade compared to my current car, not an Upgrade. But thanks for the suggestion. It is actually surprisingly light on Petrol for a V6.

Yep, although technically it's AJ20 :) I was pleasantly surprised by all the above after buying this car a few months ago.

I think, but I'm not sure, that it's more difficult to do it on the 2.0d model than petrol models and also the diesel ones are more prone to DMF issues. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Pile of ****e that Muffins, the seats look god awful - velour is what ya want.
What you should be driving is a 1.2 tdi Leon. Now that's a beasht of a yoke.

So it doesn't need a clutch or DMF replacement at the moment?

Don't think so. I'm driving it to work every day, no issues. Clutch is a bit harder than my other car and probably it may need one in the next 6-12 months, I usually do these things before they go bad, pays to do a bit of pre-emptive maintenance!

yep I think you are right there, but it is do able :)
your jammer is lovely, looks in mint condition. Puts mine to shame, she needs a valet! I love the cream leather, have it on my one too.

If you're getting the DMF done get the clutch done too. If the DMF decides to break it starts shaving off filings on the clutch which get stuck in the magetised parts of starter motor and kill that too. My DMF actually went kaput, badly. The noise was embarrassingly loud!

Just to update in case anyone was looking for info in future, I replaced the clutch (pressure plate, friction plate), slave cylinder, and dual mass flywheel and it wasn't half as bad as I thought. I supplied the parts and got my local mechanic to do it, they charged 350 for labour which is very reasonable. Now the car drivers perfectly again. Sadly have to put it up for sale now as I've just changed job and in January I'll be working somewhere very close to home and can't really justify maintaining two cars :( Hopefully someone picks the ad up and posts it as a luxobarge ;)

Ha ha, so this was really all about a prelude to you selling your great Jag with a recently replaced clutch?;)

    :p

I didn't get the joke and said something snotty but once I realised I had a sense-of-humour-failure I apologised and I am embarrassed to leave my snotty comment here so I have removed it ;)

You are free to think that, but the thread was from mid September. The clutch was fine then. Then it went in November and got replaced in December, and tomorrow is the first day of January!! So your point?

Eh, it was a joke? Hence use of smiley faces?

I apologise unreservedly then. I must have had a major sense-of-humour-failure last night. Sorry.
