What is the procedure when buying a commercial vehicle in regards to tax/ insurance as a private user. Is a vat number required in order to tax and insure it? If that is the case do you have to treat it as a private vehicle

This is where it all gets complicated! Hardly any companies will cover a private van for private use but legally you aren't really covered if you're telling them you are using it commercially but you aren't.

I had mine insured on a van policy as a private vehicle firstly by Axa and now through insure my van (Patrona underwriting it).

If you can insure the van privately you will be paying road tax at the private usage rate and you will not need to be providing vat numbers or signing the declaration form.
I would recommend that you find out if you can get private insurance on the van first.
