I am looking at buying a mini excavator to carry out some jobs around my house. Most advertisements I see are prices +VAT. Do I have to pay VAT on a machinery purchase if the purchase is not in relation to trade or business? BTW my "day job" is computer related.

Yes you do, The exception being if you're registered with a VAT number you can claim it back afterwards.
