Coming to Netflix on October 7.
The Siege of Jadotville took place in September 1961, during the United Nations intervention in the Katanga conflict in Congo-Léopoldville in Central Africa when a company of Irish UN troops were attacked by troops loyal to the Katangese Prime Minister Moise Tshombe. The lightly-armed Irish soldiers resisted Katangese assaults for six days as a relief force of Irish and Swedish troops unsuccessfully attempted to reach the Irish force besieged in Jadotville.

Jamie Dornan may have the worst fake Irish accent of all time in this.

I've read that Mark Strong is playing Conor Cruise O'Brien (never thought I would be writing that sentence!)

And on The Last Word. The clip they played sounded like some really bad acting (or it was just Jamie Dornan), which would be unfortunate because I'd like this to be really good.

    Just saw it.
One of the best war movies I have ever seen.
It is up there with Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Hamburger Hill, Zulu and All Quiet On The Western Front. It really is that good.

I was at the premiere on Monday, its a really excellent film , i thought Dornan's accent was very good, Mark Strong was Irish at the start and gradually got more English sounding!

Very interesting story and some fantastic battle scenes, would highly recommend.

Surprised there is only one cinema in Cork showing this once a day. You would think it would be pushed a bit more given the subject matter.

Richie Smith directed U2's video for The Fly which is still my favourite video by them to this day. He is partly responsible for Bono wearing those bug eye sunglasses ever since. Good to see an Irish director getting a big break.

Cruise O'Brien came from the Anglo Irish upper crust.

He didn't really. He was from middle class catholic stock but probably liked to think of himself as some kind of gentry complete with pompous accent.

It's on in Galway in the Eye, looked like only one showing per evening when I checked.

He was related to the Skeffingtons who were landlords and mill owners
His background was Catholic gentry as well.
He would have mixed among a well to do elite

I was referring more to his political journey across the spectrum (from sort of republican, to anti-republican, to Unionist) rather than to his actual accent. Not meant as a serious comment.

It really is amazing despite the hail of mortars and heavy machine gun fire and the waves of infantry that came at them again and again that A company held their perimeter and beat them off for 6 days and didn't loose a single man.

I mean at Rorke's Drift and The Battle of Ia Drang in which a similarly isolated unit were surrounded and faced similar odds that were many dead and wounded.

That Quinlan and his men were able to do what they did - giving their attackers an absolute mauling and all of the coming out alive - is simple incredible.

It deserves to be the most famous last stand in military history.

Seen this yesterday in Santry. Liked the film over all, accents kind of annoyed me a bit, beginning of the film was a bit slow but it got better. Fighting scenes were okay. Was sad to find out what happened with it all being swept under the carpet for years.

    6.5/10 from me.

    Just home from seeing this.

First off let me state I'm a serving soldier with 31 years service so I'd be looking at this from a slightly different angle than a civilian.

Over all I thought it was a story which needed to be told, and this movie done a superb job at telling it.

As a soldier there are glaring mistakes, I wondered more than once if they even had Irish military advisers to advise on things like dress (wearing of the uniform), rank markings, deportment of a soldier, radio voice procedure etc.. But these things will go right over a civilians head.

As a commanding officer, and I've served at home and abroad under both good, bad, terribly and brilliant.. The lad who played Quinlan (sorry I'm not really into actors and their names) played the part brilliantly, very believable for the most part.

Some of the battle scenes were really good (I'm speaking with some experience here), some were a little ropey but none were terrible (well maybe the fouga attack and the helicopter scene).

The end, I cringed.. It was Hollywood BS and I'll leave it at that.

    Recommended.

Was the helicopter shot down during the real battle as the trailer indicates?Only info I can find is on Wiki where it says it was "damaged".

Entertaining and I thought decent performances and humor. Some of the battle sequences don't make sense.

Connor Cruise O'Brien is a complete ****. Read his wikipedia and he was a member of UKIP!!

The British didn't have automatic weapons or mortars ar Rorke's Drift, and the Americans hadn't prepared defensive positions at IA Drang. I'd imagine also that the Zulus at Rorke's Drift and the NVA at IA Drang were a lot more motivated than the mercenaries and assortment of units at Jadotville.

They may have, but they may have ignored them anyway. I heard an account of a "historical adviser's" experience on a movie set in during the Roman Empire. The guy ended up just hanging around the set, and nobody asked his advice on anything, except once when a column of infantry was being filmed on the march. They asked him if the standard should be at the head of the column or in the centre. His response was "Well, that's actually a cavalry standard."

And that was the end of that...

I've read other sources that paint him as the "big picture" man that was working for the greater good. All depends on your viewpoint I suppose, as the movie illustrates.

No, he was a member of the UK Unionist Party (UKUP).

Watched the film today and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm sure there was some artistic licence taken, but it doesn't take away from the poor treatment of the men of A Company after they returned to Ireland and in the years since. I'm glad that they finally got some measure of the recognition they deserved a few weeks ago. It's just a pity Pat Quinlan wasn't alive to see it.

    Pretty good film.
Went through at a good speed, didn't drag at all. The 108m run time was welcome when films push 2.5hrs constantly these days.
Would have been better had they cast someone who could do an Irish accent as the lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,566 ✭✭✭ZeitgeistGlee

Watched it last night, thought it was a bit Hollywood in parts but overall a pretty decent movie, 6.5-7/10. The action is well presented and engaging, and the combat dialogue feels natural. The banter in the Jadotville bar between Dornan and Canet felt like something you'd believe happened.

That said, Dornan's accent was brutal but after a while you sort of tune it out and his physical action sells the role. Strong gives vague attempt at the brogue before giving up half way through (appropriate for CCO'B) and I almost expected McElhatton to tell Dornan "the Lannisters send their regards" over the radio. Likewise what Emmanuelle Seigner's scenes add to the movie I have no idea other than to take up space.

For all its faults though the lads from A Company absolutely deserve recognition (and those involved in covering it up to be condemned) for their courage and steadfast determination in the face of such odds and I'm glad the movie was made.

I can't help but wonder if it would've been better or worse had it been picked up by someone in Hollywood with an Irish connection and given a proper silver screen backing.

Had looked forward to seeing this for ages and while it wasn't bad it was disappointing in some respects. The script was quite weak and didn't really do the characters or story justice. Quinlan was meant to be a great leader and military tactition but this didn't really come across, all he ever said during the battle scenes was 'pick your targets'. Mark Strong to play Conor Cruise O'Brien has to be one of the weirdest casting decisions ever. It seems to be getting good reviews though, hope it does well as the story deserves to be told.

Considering the time setting, are you all sure the accent isn't accurate? We would have less strong accents nowadays due to globalisation and increased film/tv watching.....

I like the accent. Seems like he'd fit in well with the cast of Bracken or Glenroe.

Watched it for the second time tonight. You can see the lack of finance in their approach, though I don't think it takes much away from the film.
I'd prefer something historically accurate over a blockbuster blood and gore fest

I enjoyed it , interesting to see what americans make of it. The accents didnt bother me at all, there was one line when Quinlan comes out of the church and goes over to look out and I think he says "do you want to catch me up?" unless I misheard it I thought that was off. The other soldiers were wafer thin as characters, liked the end scene at the airfield.
