    Hello,

Thinking of moving on from my 500d to a 50d.

I know that this model is discontinued but from what I remember, it was a cracking camera. Can be gotten now for very reasonable money.

However, is there something that I'm missing out on?

Looking at the specs side by side there would be almost no upgrade for you,
you gain in FPS and 1 stop of max shutter speed but that is about it and you loose video.

A 60D or 70D might be more of a worthwhile upgrade.

Won't go into massive detail here, as it's probably overkill, but if used with Magic Lantern firmware, the 50D is an excellent choice.
Especially for filming, (which it can't do without ML, or an external HDMI recorder) all due to the use of CF cards instead of SD cards that bottleneck write speeds of the 60D.

If that doesn't matter, anything from a 50D onwards are still a good choice as an upgrade,
with noticeably better FPS and the excellent LP-E6 battery, from the 60D onward.

The 50D/60D/70D/80D have a similar chassis to the likes of the 5D range, with controls in much less frustrating layout than the likes of the 500D,600D etc..
They feel very well built too compared to those models, that can be a bit plasticy in the hand.
