Friend driving my car was caught doing 61 in a 50 in my car by a speed van. He has since returned to UK but I rang the helpline today to explain and pay had all details, driving licence number but they informed me I need to provide proof of insurance and travel documents to say friend has left the country??

Insurance is no problem as I have fully comp all drivers etc.
Travel documents, cant understand why I should have to provide these?

    Any advice?
    Thanks

I can see why they can ask for something related to the driving of the car at a particular point in time, but not things subsequent. I would provide the insurance and state that you are not aware of your friends travel arrangements.

I can provide insurance no problems. Travel documents seemed a bit funny alright tho! Could of just as easily been from the North.

I imagine they are looking for the drivers licence details?

Get your friend to send you his booking confirmation. That should work. Would be the easier way out of it too if that's all they are looking for. Remember the burden of proof is on you. Otherwise you could just send your friends license details every time you (I mean he) gets caught speeding!!
If he was from the North I am sure they would have asked you for some other guff!

Why do you need to provide them with insurance details ? He could of had open policy on his insurance that allows him drive other cars . Provide them with his name and address and license details and let them chase him up

Maybe they want some evidence that your friend was actually in this country on the date you said he was driving your car? in case you have a friend in the uk willing to say it was them as the points won't appear on a UK driving licence assuming it's not an Irish licence your friend holds.

What's the difficulty in him giving you his booking confirmation or whatever proof of travel he has?

I doubt his insurance would cover driving a vehicle registered in another country.

This is from the Garda FAQ section:

I own the vehicle but was not driving at the time. What do I do?
The Statement of Nomination of Name and Address of Driver section (see reverse of notice) must be completed by the owner of the vehicle with the name and address of the driver of the vehicle on the date of the offence. The completed notice should be returned to the Fixed Charge Processing Office within 28 days of the date of the notice. No payment should be returned at this time as a new notice will be issued to the driver. It is the responsibility of the owner, not the driver, to complete the notice.

Can you not just fill out the section overleaf and let them issue the notice directly to your friend?

Just curious - do they send notice abroad?

As far as I know they don't but in the case of a rental car the rental company will send it on to you.

They ask for these details because too many people pulled a stroke in the past and blamed their own indiscretions on "friends visiting from another country".

Why would you be all set to pay, which is an admission of liability, if it wasn't you?

AGS is calling custard on you, that's all.
