I expect to be changing the chain on my road bike in the coming weeks. Wondering if it is good practice to change the cassette at the same time to ensure a smooth run in etc. etc.

A worn cassette will wear out a new chain quicker. So in this instance I would change the cassette. Next time, change the chain more frequently as the cassette will last a bit longer.
