Stove smoking

I lit my stove the other day and found it was really smokey. I could not open the door of it without it blowing smoke out.

This was the first time it was lit since about March. I got the chimney cleaned professionally around 8 months ago. The chimney has a bird grill on top.

Someone said to me it happens to theirs as well for the first fire of the season as the flue/chimney is cold. Anyone else heard of this.

Could be a cold or wet flue for the first fire.or more than likely needs to be cleaned.could be blocked at a bend at the back of the stove.call a sweep

My stove has a baffle (I think it's called) inside my stove just at the top of the chamber. This can be removed and if it is not correctly put back in, it can cause a lot of smoke especially when you open the door. You might want to check this. Mine easily slots into place when you move it. You might want to try this.

So I took the stove out. cleaned the flue - a little bit of crap in there. I also cleaned down all the bits in the stove... baffle etc. All put back together and working well... no smoke and burning well. Then I lit it again last night and same problem again with the smoke!!!

    any ideas?

Is the room you have your stove in properly ventilated? If you open a window a fraction, does it still smoke?
Did you clean the chimney right to the top?

Have you checked you chimney pot on the roof? Missing broken pieces can interfere with the negative pressurisation created by a full chimney pot.

I just pulled the stove out again and the flue had a load more crap in it.... i had cleaned it out about 10 days ago and have lit 2 fires... seems the last person that cleaned the chimney may not have done such a good job.... either that or he dislodged loads of stuff and it only falling now.... looks like another sweep is needed afterall
