What should I look out for in buying a 2007 Mercedes C180, 2 litre, automatic, petrol. Don't know exact mileage but very low. It is only used on run arounds. A friend of in-laws is selling the car. €8500 is the asking price.

Sounds a bit dear for a private sale.

Ones being sold from dealers here with a warranty for alot less:

Timing chains are known problems on those engines. They get rattly due to stretching and will need changing.

2007 and petrol. The 2 most undesirable things in a car for most buyers! Demand will be low, everybody wants a 2008+ diesel for the cheap tax.

You should get it for a lot less.

This is not to say anything bad about the car, I honestly don't know much about the merc c class from that era but well specced it's a nice looking car.

For what it's worth, I am thinking of buying an 07 5 series petrol at the moment, its about half the asking price of an 08 diesel!

Are you certain about the engine? I thought the 2.0 was discontinued to push the 1.8 kompressor... Anyway, if it is indeed the 2.0 n/a, it was built to last, you shouldn't have any issues with it, it'll be slow though. The other one (1.8 supercharged) has a little more poke but it had issues at first, which were mainly sorted after the facelift (in 2005).

As to the rest of the car, make sure every electrics work as expected, check all 4 arches, bottoms of the doors and where the front and rear arch's meet the bumper for rust.

The post facelifts are a lot better than previously built ones (so 2007 should be quite reliable), and if memory serves, it should resist rust better as they've started to use some better paint for the facelift.

Still, sounds overpriced, I'd pay no more than 6000 for one myself.

Only got the information secondhand, so I'm not sure.

I s it definitely the older model? A newer one did come out that year. By all accounts the newer one is a lot more reliable.

As far as I'm aware, the newer one did not come with this engine, if it is indeed the 2.0 n/a. So I take it it is the W203, one of the last ones (which is good, as a lot was sorted out by then).
