ITALY may have a 40 per cent youth unemployment rate, but it’s definitely doing some things for its young people,The Italian government has announced a €500 euro (£430) “culture bonus” so its 18-year-olds can take in theatre, gigs, art, museums and archaeological sites. The money has to be spent through a special app, and they have until the end of 2017 to spend it all.

“We will not give in to terror… we have centuries of history that proclaim the fact that culture will beat ignorance, that beauty is more tenacious than barbarism.”

Don't think it work here myself, sure don't they get enough as it is...

They do have a lot of culture in Italy, and this is really a subsidy to the Italian tourism sector, and good for the mental health of the young people.

What a waste of resources. :(

We all know that if youths can't 'culture' the €500 up their nose they simply won't be interested.

Kind of apt as their future is in ruins...

Library service is provided for free by the state in Ireland. Best source of culture imaginable.

And the conservatives here aren't even happy with that.

Its a good idea because at the end of the day that money will end up right back in the governments hands though taxation.

Increases moral and boosts the ecomony.

I dont tihnk it'll turn out a waste though. You can only spend the money via a special app so Im sure theres some kind of restrictions in place so they can only spend it on culture events tickets and things like that. And if its not spent then it goes back to the government. So it gives students the choice to enjoy more culture, and if they don't well then its nobodys loss but their own.

Seeing as Italy only pays unemployment benefit based on previous earnings, their youth get little of nothing. They'd be better suited giving the 18 year olds money they can live on.

In effect I am guessing it costs the state nothing as the museums etc are all state owned. They have to spend it in the app, which means the goverment aren't actually giving out any money at all, but people feel like they are getting something for free. In reality no money is changing hands at all - its saying €500 but in effect its 500 "culture tokens"

I don't think its a great fit for this problem, but its an innovative initiative nonetheless.
