Are there too many useless 3rd level courses available today?

I was talking to someone in recruitment who told me that a lot of degrees and diplomas on offer today are completely useless out in the market place. Apparently employers completely discount a lot of the degrees on graduates' CVs and are well aware of which degrees are the real deal, and which are not worth the paper they're written on.

Do you think a lot of school leavers are being duped into wasting 3-4 years studying for mickey mouse qualifications which are no more use to them than their leaving cert? A lot of them would probably be a lot better off doing apprenticeships or training 'on the job'. We seem to have become obsessed with everyone going to 'college' whether they're suited to it or not.

Dozens upon dozens of useless degrees, but there are still some employers who won't even interview an applicant without a degree, regardless of relevance.

Absolutely - a professional qualification such as ACCA or CIMA is much more sought after than a business degree from an average Irish university.

Yup.
I spent three years in college getting a degree in a field that I haven't worked a day in since.
Ten years later I'm working in the industry where I worked part time throughout college. I just stayed in the job and studied relevant courses and got training on the job.

depends on what your friend considers useless.

i worked in recruitment and work in HR now and would never discount someone who did a 4 year degree in lets say Arts just because it doesnt have a specific career path.

a degree is what you put into it. it shows you can research, write reports, etc etc

Certain parts or schools in Ireland have this obsession with University further education is a great option for many students who dont see the 4 year degree as the b all and end all and its extremely under valued in Ireland for some reason.
