Just looking for a nice hotel/apartment in a nice town with a few shops, places to eat and nice beach..nothing hectic..was looking at vilamoura or albufeira but not sure? Also would anyone have any idea of temp at the end of oct from experience..thanks

We stayed in the Real Marina Apartments in Olhao on the Spanish side of Faro.

    Its anything but hectic :)
Apartments have a pool on the roof plus access to the pool at the hotel.
Its beside the marina with boats going out to the islands with some fantastic beaches.

Its about a 15 minute drive from Faro.

If you need any info PM me.

Love the Algarve and are heading there again in a few weeks, to Carvoiero this time.

We've been to Albufeira before in October, the old town is great whereas the new town is a bit tacky but still great. In October it will be fairly peaceful with a few about so there is an atmosphere. I'd suggest staying in or near the old town if you visit. If looking for a cheap enough place in the New Town area we stayed at the Natura. Rooms are basic but they have a great pool, breakfast restaurant 1 minute walk away and about 5 minute walk to New Town strip and supermarkets etc. Taxi from here to Old Town is always €5.

We've also spent a couple holidays in Luz (where Madeleine McCann went missing:(). Beautiful spot, family orientated and the beach is brilliant. Fairly quiet place, no nightclubs or anything like that but a few lovely restaurants and bars. However it is about an hour away from Faro so you'd need a car for a bit of comfort. Stayed at the pricier Baia da Luz which is a fantastic spot, great kiddies pool and about a 10minute stroll to a great beach.

From memory Villamoura is more for the golfing crowd but I could be wrong.

Consider hiring a car from this crowd (zestcarrental.com) so you can explore/get around. They operate as booking site for a number of smaller car hire companies that operate out of kiosks in the car park at the airport.

Million miles better then the bigger companies (Hertz, Avis etc). Cars won't be brand new but the prices are great. Also operate a fair fuel policy (bring it back with roughly what was in it) and at most you'll need €400 credit card cover. I've used them a few times (LuzCar and TravelRent) with 0 problems.
You can find out more by visiting the TripAdvisor forums.

If hiring don't forget to download the google maps for the area so you can have free sat nat with your phone. Driving in Portugal is relatively easy but it's always nice to have directions to where you are going.

Weather is generally sunny and low 20's.

On another note, if you happen to get a chance to get out for a beer hit the local spots (avoiding the irish pubs) and meet the locals. The Portugese are absolutely wonderful and they love kids so don't worry about noise or that.

    Enjoy
