€10k to Spend on a hatchback

Trying to help someone make a decision on what new car to buy.

Currently has a 2008 focus, so looking for a 5 door hatchback with a diesel engine. Reliability is the main thing that they are looking for.

The Focus is a serious pile of ****e. Constantly giving trouble, so on those grounds, no Fords will be considered.

Hyundais and Kias in the family (2009 +) have given plenty headaches (Kia warranty covered costs but the hassle makes it unattractive).

No French cars for obvious reasons. I have had new ones in the family giving serious trouble as recently as 2014.

Toyota Auris is currently the forerunner. VAG don't offer good value for money in terms of reliability and Skodas don't fit the bill.

    Any other cars to consider?

You've pretty much ruled everything out so except the Auris.

It's difficult to suggest a more reliable diesel hatchback than a 1.4d4d auris. The only other car I can think of is a honda civic.

Say you import a Vauxhall Astra (or indeed any Vauxhall car) and down the line look to sell it here in the South. Might there be issues attracting a buyer as it is a Vauxhall rather than an Opel or is it really all about the car rather than the badge ?

The OP wants a reliable diesel car though, a Mazda 6 would be from the class above what the OP is looking for and Mazda's track record with diesel engine reliability in the 6 is far from positive.

Not these days, plenty of Vauxhalls imported from the UK so people have got over their apprehension from years ago. Vauxhalls and Opels are identical these days except for the badging.

The diesel engine in those isn't the best though

10k would easily get you into the 1.33 dual vvti petrol engine too. Very cheap to tax, I think its €180 or thereabouts. The reason I'm suggesting the petrol, is that the gearbox in the d4d is known to give trouble.
