Eating down strong grass

I've a field where the grass has gotten too strong and I need to get it eaten down.
I've a couple of in-calf heifers (they're 3 years old - long story - a number of AI attempts didn't work so they ended up running with a bull), and 6 month old calves.

My plan is to let the calves in first and give them first dibs, so to speak, at the grass; and then let the heifers in later on to take what's left. I'll strip graze it so that they don't just trample it into the ground.

Is that the best approach? Better than letting the heifers in first?

Note that the heifers are at 5 and 4 months, and are quite strong, so I don't want to give them too much grass or they'll blow up and could have very large calves. The grass wouldn't be the golden vale!!! :o

bale it up or put down a strip wire and pre mow it if your stuck for grass, otherwise you'll be lucky to utilise 50% of it.

i assume you would have baled it if was an option

if its that strong i'd be doing what Who says above

mow it 24hrs ahead of them ( it's a little sweeter then) and give it to them small and often - 2 if not 3 times a day if you could

if the heifers are that strong twill do them fine short term - not much good to the calves - even letting them in ahead of heifers

was it a field in for a Glas measure by any chance??:D:D

i had to do the same last week
