Sound of Silence by Disturbed makes me feel queezy at this stage. sick to the pit of my stomach. where the hell is music going?

Words cannot describe how much I hate that song. Well, that version anyway! It's not as painful to listen to as All Of Me by John Legend, but it is extremely dire. It doesn't help that it is way overplayed. We've tried Nova in work, but it hasn't lasted long, even giving it more chances. Q102 is worse! Certain shows on Nova are fine, but their playlist needs a major revamp overall. The likes of Coldplay and Travis should not be on a station Like Nova.

I didn't mind it at first, it was an adequate reimagining of a classic. But now it drives me mad. And every DJ who plays it and listener who requests it makes it out to be the best cover since Joe Cocker's version of 'With a Little Help from my Friends'.

I did a bit of analysis of Nova's tracklist there recently actually. 98 songs all told; you could do more, but the trend wasn't changing.

The average year of a song was 1991. (The median was 1990) So half of all songs are from the 90s or newer. Only one song in 6 was from before 1977.

By decade, there was 20 songs from the 70s, 80s and 10s, 19 from the 90s, 10 from the 00s and 9 from the 60s. So the 00s were more represented than the 60s, and the current decade is top of the lot. There was ten songs from 2016 alone, including the only songs repeated in the period - Bang Bang by Greenday and Hole In My Soul by Kaiser Chiefs. The Kaiser Chiefs song was actually played three times; the only other bands to be played three times were Blur and Nirvana (three different songs played once each)

Bands played twice were - Bastille, Bon Jovi, Green Day, Kings of Leon, Pearl Jam (Alive twice), Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Tom Petty, and ZZ Top.

But there's an awful lot of stuff like Max Headroom notes - Heathens, Two Door Cinema Club, Richard Hawley, Vance Joy, Kongos, The Kooks, The Fratellis, Doves, etc, etc, etc.

No AC/DC in the 98 songs, interestingly.

I guess take of that what ye will!

Fair play, some serious leg work.

And what it tells us is that Nova is sticking pretty closely to the remit of its licence.

I don't understand the objections to the music. Some of the DJs are pillocks, but that's par for the course these days.

Personally I think that new music, particularly those that are more like hip-hop or pop, has no place on a classic rock station.

I can't remember the last time I heard Freebird in its full 9 odd minutes glory or Hold The Line By Toto, for example. Think K-DST in GTA San Andreas (for those that played it). It's a classic rock station, obviously.

Dad Rock when on TOday FM was what Classic Rock is. They had specials on at Christmas that would have filled a number of audio tapes, and provided for great listening. I know Marty MIller did a similar show on Nova for a time on Friday nights. The weekday format lacks in this sort of thing. Certainly, the direction has changed since it started, I feel.

Yeah this is the issue. From day one, Nova has always played present-day hits. There is a misconception here that they should only play oldies, but that is not and has never been the case.

Pat will always throw on Hurricane to eat up 10mins in the afternoon, I'd say they are hangover days

Remember years ago before downloads or even CD's ,jox had to bring their own records in to play.....imagine if they had to bring in the same 10 albums every day...thats Nova...:P

It's definitely losing its classic rock leanings. One thing I've noticed though is that the wishy washy pop crap is played more Monday- Friday, than at the weekends.

A dangerously slippy slope, wasn't that the beginning of Phantom's downfall...?

They are playing around with playlist - its normal - listener reaction aka the JNLRs will decide if they are going to persist with the newer music.

Phantoms downfall was the operating costs (unavoidable under BAI rules) were too much for a niche station.

I think people are misdescribing classic rock music when calling it "dad rock." You surely mean "granddad rock" at this stage.

Nova's target demographic are apparently technologically illiterate head-bangers. That doesn't describe dads to me.

    1. Listens to Nova all day every day.

    2. Comes on to boards to say Nova listeners are all stupid.

    3. Fails to see irony.

    4. Repeats.

Not in professional stations it wasn't.

In the 80s and early 90s it was mainly carts which caused no amount of murder by those who were stopping them and not re-cuing them and the next jock who faced the inevitable dead air.

Then CD carts before playout systems took over.

I am sure there is some reason like song testing that someone is implementing. I don't believe in it myself, mind you I was never one for following playlists rigidly.

I find it hard to believe that ACDC doesn't feature in all that. Makes me think that KB is taking a back seat in music programming, which he would struggle to do!

Not a big fan of song testing - currently Nova are playing Go Robot by the Chilis - not a particularly good song imho and I am reminded of Chris Carys philosophy on the original Nova that you don't put something on the play list because it's new - it's got to be good as well - the new Nova is forgetting that

Did you work on the original Nova or are you in the industry? Not trying to find the real life person - just curious cos you seem to have a lot of information that a normal outsider like me :P would never have.

Chris was legendary in radio circles.

Robbie Irwin was fired several times in Nova, despite never being an employee.

There's a video on YouTube by Miles Johnston where Chris states his music policy.
Even though Nova was CHR to a high degree, not much more than 50 % of chart music would get to be played on Nova.

So was I. Well once anyway.
A friend of mine was fired at least 19 times but still turned up for work next day as normal.

I don't really have a problem with the daytime music. I understand that they're trying to attract new listeners from other stations that have lost listeners, plus there's plenty of variety on the specialist shows on the weekends. I know the presenters can be a bit much sometimes, there's no denying that.

And of course listeners that have lost their station!

I can see both sides of the argument in relation to their music. The daytime programs can't be the likes of Pat James' Off The Record or Tony Anscough's Friday Rock Show, but they could inject a bit more variety in the mix, dip into the archives more, have your odd randomizer album track and get rid of all that tedious chat in the morning. More music less chat indeed!

That brick wall has a huge indent Declan......I think KB has his own agenda or someone else is pulling his strings....they're too comfortable now, so i cant see any major changes ahead....luckily i have a vast vinyl/cd collection..;)

Four over nights on the trot.....around the same time, that there's been good Irish rock. Sun, Horslips - The Man Who Built America. Mon, Mama's Boys - Needle in The Groove. Tues, Horslips - Dearg Doom. Wed, The Blades - Ghost of a Chance. Maybe the over night programmer has a bit of soul in him :D

Don't know when I've heard Mama's Boys on Nova last. But think it was middle of the night. Hear them way more often on Late Date sadly.
