Varnish/ oil for mahogany gates?

    Hello, I got a set of mahogany gates made up 6 months ago and I garnished them with clear yacht varnish. On the side that gets the sunlight the varnish has turned whitish and has come away from the timber in places.
    I can get sadolin mahogany woodstain in the local shop and paint that over? Or should I sand off varnish or use nitromors etc,? Thanks

    I would sand off the finish that's deteriorating. If you don't, there's a good chance that whatever you put on over it won't stick either, as it will be sticking to the deteriorating finish - if that makes sense?

    Woodstain won't protect your timber, it'll only colour it. Think about an oil or a different sort of varnish.

    The problem with Yacht varnish is that its impermeable, and once water gets behind it, it bubbles off.
    You need to use a Microporous varnish that breathes and will allow water vapour to exit from behind the finish without bubbling.
    Sikkens would be one that I could recommend.
