So I am planning on building a htpc, and getting rid of sky. I wat to use the htpc as a satellite receiver for free to air channels and hd where available, but I am overwhelmed by all the options for cards, and the accompanying jargon. Can anybody suggest some good cards that would be suitable? I want to be able to watch and record

I presently use TBS cards. They are robust and reliable.
There are cheaper cards out there.

If starting from scratch you could also consider getting a SAT>IPTV LNB, which has, essentially, 8 tuners built in and provides the signal from the dish in IP format over a single CAT 6 cable which can be plugged into your LAN or HTPC.
It is of course costly, but there is no need for Satellite tuner cards in a HTPC as it is all done at the Sat Dish.

If starting from scratch I would go this route, eliminating the requirements of housing, powering etc the Sat tuner cards. No multiple co-ax cables to be run from dish to HTPC ... an ether cable suffices.
