    Hi All

Quick a quick query that has been on my mind for the last few weeks.

    Situation is as below :

3 lanes : 1st lane left turn only
2nd lane left and right turn
    3rd lane right turn only

Who has right of way in a situation where I am in lane 2 turning right into lane 2 and another person who is in lane 3 wants to turn right and change into lane 2.

Here is a google map of a junction that I am talking about https://goo.gl/maps/CRN7oGWhB8k

Traffic is coming down Eglingtion St

Generally you'll have the right of way as you are already in the lane but if the person in lane 3 starts barging in I'd let them go, in the US it's illegal to change lanes when turning at junctions AFAIK it's legal here.

In my opinion you are in the wrong lane. The middle lane turning right on to Albert quay you should go into the lane just by the river, the person in lane 3 should go into middle lane on Albert quay or the lane by the new office block.

I think being aware of other peoples stupidity is important in a junction like this! I would think that remaining in lane is logical, but I could also see a situation where moving straight to lane one after turning making sense too.

It shouldn't really be about one's opinion.

Why is it that the person in lane 3 has the option of 2 lanes?
Why shouldn't the person in lane 2 have the option of the left lane & the middle lane, and the person in lane 3 stay in lane 3?

I would think* that a corner is not the place to be changing lanes, and one should follow the road markings, and change lanes before/after the corner.

*I am aware that this is an opinion :)

I would be of the opinion that if you are in lane 3 you turn right into lane 3, in lane 2 you can turn right into lane 2 or indicate into lane 1. The reason for this is that, in lane 2, there will be no car on your left also trying to get into lane 1 as apposed to a car in lane 3 trying to change lanes into lane 2 with another car almost guaranteed to be on your left also turning right

Why is there no definite rule for this ?

I would agree that moving from lane 3 should move into lane 3 and lane 2 into lane 2.

Lane 2 can then indicate and move over to lane 1.

Thats the way I look at it too

Causes huge problems everyday at this junction and surrounding junctions with people blocking entire lanes

Someone really should put up a sign expressly stating the lane usage expected on that junction.

My assumption would be to join the next road into the left most lane available to me, so entering from lane 2(3) and turning into lane 1(2).

Don't look at it as 3 lanes ........only 2 lanes turn

Lane 1 tuning which is the middle lane on approach turns into
Lane 1 on the new road....

Lane 2 turning which is the far right turns into lane 2 on new road.

Lane 3 on the new road is also available to cars only turning in the far right lane. Obvisaly cars turning right at the next junction would pick this lane as soon or they turn or turn into lane 2 then change to lane 3

It sounds like because your in middle lane of 3 on approach that you think that your in lane 2 when actually in lane 1 of 2 turning

Hope I haven't confused you more

    Principle of keeping left.

2 lanes turning right - leftmost turn lane takes leftmost lane after the turn, other lane takes lane 2.

If there's a 3rd lane, that you want for some reason, you should be in the rightmost of the turning lanes and turn into it or join it from lane 2 after the corner.

That way you avoid a situation where you've got 2 lanes trying to merge into one.
