Does anyone know can you change your first name by deed poll and if so does it have to be in Dublin or can it be done locally where I live? ( Laois)

I did this last year. You need to some deed paper available from legal stationary suppliers. Costs around €5 for a around 25 pages. Have some spare here. Send me a pm with your address and I'll post some to you if you want.

    You then print two pages
    http://www.courts.ie/offices.nsf/(WebFiles)/19D92A7D61354B0480257C6D005E9E4D/$FILE/Template%20of%20Adult%20Deed%20Poll.doc
    And

    Changing the required fields.

You need to get the second one signed by a commissioner of oaths or a solicitor and a witness ( Any over 18 that has seen you sign the first page)

Most places will accept these as proof of your new name. The on,y place that won't that I know of is the driving license authority. You can go to the four courts to have it stamped and then every place will accept it. This needs to be done in person and costs around €35. I didn't do this as I didn't need to do this.

    Have a look here

so you need to get it done in Dublin then? is it possible you could get it done in any court?

Only if you need to apply for a driving license. Every other place will accept the two pages as a name change I did it for my new husband. Every one accepted his new name change and he doesn't need a new driving license for a while. You can't do it in court. It can only be stamped in the four courts in Dublin and if you need this done it has to be done in public.

Yes to both of them. After I had the form signed ( second link one above) I got it photo copied and sent it to all places that had his old name and asked the. To change his name in their records. The medical card people sent a new card with his new name. Recently got anew passport Same thing.

As long as you are over 18 and an EU citizen this will work

If you are under 18 you need both your parents permission.

If you are not an EU citizen you need permission from the minister for justice

    It's also your identity

Op do it. My husband had been known by his new name for at least 25years and doesn't recognize his birth name. In fact it sends a shiver down his neck when he hears it.

I agree but lots of Chinese people use name's like Timmy, Mick etc because we wouldn't have a chance at getting their real names

They use those names in every day use but not on their legal documents. A deed poll for legal documents is a totally different thing

In case anyone else is looking for info on changing your name: we were scratching our heads about this for a while and then found Orca Print, right beside the Four Courts and they do the whole thing and then you just have to enrol it.

Just to let people know if you are an irish citizen you don't have to enroll the deed, you can if you want but it is of no difference if you do except for the E60 fee, i did my deed poll a few weeks ago, didnt enroll it, have most things now changed in new name, For your passport and driving licence you must be in use of new name for two years before you can change them, the deed poll makes no different to that

The only place that won't take it is the driving license. Afaik for that it must be enrolled.
