Top communications guy in Diageo to take over in 98. Any one else see this as yet another blundering from Denis and his team. A man who has, from what it seems, spent his career in the drinks industry, stepping in as CEO of a radio station.

John Burns begins in October and is quoted as saying he is looking forward to being part of a team which is enjoying growing figures.

Wonder if he even looked at their past few jnlr books before coming out with that statement.

Yet another player who has no radio experience in the saga that is 98.

Most CEO's don't have experience in the field they are in, they are there to drive the business side of it. You could argue that putting someone whos worked in radio in would be an equally terrible idea for the business side.

    The Lonely One.

It doesnt take a genius to work out who you are and its not a great idea to be bitching about your current workplace FM104 and your past workplace 98FM in all your posts

Time to change your username and your attitude buddy.

Deer o deer you seem to be confused. I certainly do not work for fm104 and has been a few years since I have been any where near 98. I make a good wage giging so do not have to be wraped up in all that red tape. As for the atitude I speak as I find. I never have or ever will be the type to pussy foot around just to keep others happy. Over they years all radio has become lazy. All the stations have there problems. 98 104 today fm. Do not even get me started on the abomination that is 2fm.

It is my opinion. Head of a drink company as CEO just seems a wee bit unjustified. Why not employ some one from in the field. Some one who all ready knows the inns and outs of radio.

There probably aren't a lot of the people in the industry that have a business background to lead a big organisation like that, moving someone in because they have a radio background could also be dangerous because they could start to interefere with the running of a station. In my experience the CEO of a company is a figurehead and deals with more marketing and external matters. I would be more worried if they had hired a Station Manager who had no radio background, I guess a Radio background would be an ideal in a CEO if possible.

When Willie O'Reilly was ceo of Today Fm, he made all the big scheduling decisions such as hiring his mates Ray Darcy and Tony Fenton

You obviously don't know anything about business. He has experience of leading big companies, that's what is needed in a CEO. Not experience in the field. What would a radio presenter know about finances and leading a company?

And where was the mention of radio presenters in my post? Please do not jump the gun and put words in my mouth as such.

Margret Nellson in fm104 started as sales worked her way up and is now CEO. Perfect example of some one with experience in the field.

    Right ,

For weeks now, I have been getting text upon text asking am I "The Lonely One" on boards and even so far as to a "friendly" tip off that if the sender of said tip could figure out who I was, so could my my boss, Dave.

Well both my PD & APD know its not me. Lads, cop on, get a grip and get back to work.

BTW, I didn't do well in the leaving but i'd like to think I've got a better grasp on the queens english than that of Lonely One

Jesus, If you're going to suspect me of being somebody, please let it be somebody who can at least write good, yeah!!

Erm, Paul, shouldn't that be the Queen's English?
please let it be somebody who can at least write good

Again Paul, should that not be write well?

If you're trying to distance yourself from The Lonely One, this is a bit of a problem, no?

Don't know the in's and out of radio but I do know that putting an experienced business executive into (what seems like) a poorly performing company is an excellent idea. Fresh ideas, new work practices and no prejudicial views on whats happened before or who did what etc.

Many top CEO's have no experience of the actual business they are parachuted into, they have experience of making things work.

I would expect big changes in 98FM and it will probably start in the 'back office' functions first. Sales and Marketing will be the number 1 target for this guy to turn around
