Only getting to post this now. Made second cut silage back in July. Anyway to cut a long story short decided to cut another 5 acre field at the very end and put the 10ft Kuhn mower on the Ford 5000 (was able to run mower on the 540 pto) as the other tractors were drawing and on the harvester.

Now tractor was all out and not fit for the job I know but there was no fierce panic on so was able to take it handy. What I noticed was that the PTO used to get fits of stopping turning. Id say it happened about 6-7 times and when I would stop and lift the mower the PTO would take off again. Tractor wouldn't die but you would notice the mower would stop etc. Now because the tractor is only used otherwise for fert spreading I wouldn't have ever noticed this problem. Could the PTO clutch be only fair in it? I have noted before that when you do turn on the PTO ticking over that it could take 10 seconds to get going or would get going straight away with a few revs.

Backend was full of oil up to the mark.

It could be the small feeder pipe bringing oil up from the main hydraulic pump to the clutch pack. They are made of plastic and eventually split/crack. You say it was full of oil, but going up hill if oil is low pto will stop because clutch pack doesn't get oil.

Dirty suction filter is another possibility, but if your hydraulics are good I'd suspect the small feeder pipe first. Lift cover off is the easiest way to get at it. Get back to me if you are going at it, there's a few tips if you haven't done it before.

It only happens if low on oil, you said yours is up to the plug. I reckon there's a small crack in that pipe, when tractor got hot oil pressure to the clutch pack dropped. Does the pto still work when the tractor is cold?
