I am looking to hire in London next week for a day. Would my axa insurance cover me to drive for the day or well I just pay for the insurance while booking the car which is also with axa

No, your own insurance won't cover you.

Afair most car rental companies in Europe include insurance as standard to every rental.
Usually with big excess though, and give you an option to pay extra to lower or exclude this excess.

I went ahead and paid the 8.50. Booked the car through ryanair

That 8.50 is then probably just Super CDW which makes your excess zero.
Well worth it if you're renting just for 1 day.
Not so much, if you're renting for longer.

Most policies specifically exclude driving hire cars

When you hire a car insurance is included.
There are various levels of insurance you can choose from but they won't let you drive without it.

I was living in london, tried to use my uk insurance on an irish rental and they refused. If i was renting a uk reg that would have been fine apparently.
