Does anyone know why townlands are no longer marked on google maps? Were they using OSI data, which the OSI later refused google the right to use?

I am not sure I recall townland boundaries being included on Google Maps, or Google Earth. If they were, I doubt that the OSI had exclusive ownership of displaying the boundaries - but I could easily be wrong on both counts.
It would be interesting to know if they can be downloaded as a data set.

Up until a few months ago all townland names were marked on google maps, so you could look around a certain area and be able to know which townland you were looking at. This is no longer the case. Also, if you searched for a townland previously, it would zoom in on the area, and also roughly show the boundary of the townland using only straight lines, not as exact as OSI but still useful. Now, if you search for a townland by typing in the name, it will zoom in on the location which will be pinned, but the townland name will not be shown on the map itself.

I've noticed that too - very frustrating.
I would use it quite a bit for work purposes and it's a pain.
