Hi. I lost my job a couple of weeks ago & so I've just been to my social welfare office to sign on. They want 6 months worth of bank statements. It's just a lot of personal information and I'm not comfortable handing that over to anyone. Is this something I'll just have to get over?

Yes, no way round that if you are being means tested and have a bank account(s). If you are applying for jobseekers benefit as opposed to jobseekers allowance they dont need bank statements as benefit is not means tested, its based on your prsi contributions.
