RTE announced some new/returning programmes today. Cobbled together from the usual places here are some of them ...

    Drama

Striking Out is a four-part drama about love, family and friendship set in the world of Ireland’s legal system and stars Amy Huberman, Rory Keenan and Neil Morrissey.

Acceptable Risk, a six-part thriller starring Elaine Cassidy and Resistance, is a War of Independence drama from the makers of the recent 1916 drama Rebellion, and goes into production in the coming months.

The Fall returns for Series 3, as Gillian and Jamie's cat and mouse chase reaches a deadly conclusion.

My Mother and Other Strangers is 5 part series set in Northern Ireland and follows the fortunes of the Coyne family and their neighbours as they struggle to maintain a normal life after a huge US Air Force airfield arrives in the middle of their rural parish in 1943.(BBC NI Co-production)

EastEnders offshoot Redwater is on the way. When Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) arrive in Ireland from London to search for Kat’s long-lost son, they uncover secrets that the village of Redwater would rather were left buried at sea. (Not sure if RTE have any involvement in this but they are plugging it on their website)

Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope is a six-part, darkly comic drama on RTÉ2 that's been penned by TV newcomer Stefanie Preissner and starring up-and-coming talents Seána Kerslake and Nika McGuigan.

    Documentary

    Kenny
A two part documentary about Taoiseach (at the time of writing) Enda Kenny. The blurb on the RTE site at the moment says "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum", which suggests its in Latin. Or they haven't updated the placeholder text yet. http://rteonenewseason.rte.ie/portfolio/kenny/

Keeping Ireland Alive: The Health Service in a day
One Day. 75 cameras throughout the country. The health service as you've never seen it before. For one day we push passed the headlines to tell the human stories at the heart of this often controversial but most vital service.

John Connors: The Travellers Actor John Connors on the history of the Travellers

Rural Addiction Tackling the growing problem of addiction sweeping rural Ireland

Generation Jinxed – Generation F’D: A three part documentary revealing life for Ireland’s 25-35-year-olds, struggling to kickstart their adult lives

    Reality

Dancing with the Stars - the international version off BBC's Strictly Come Dancing - debuts in January, while restaurant based dating show First Dates returns.

Daniel and Majella’s B&B Road Trip moves from UTV Ireland to RTÉ One and sees Danjella hit the road again with 12 new B&B owners serving up unforgettable experiences.

    Comedy

The Tommy Tiernan Show gets a full series. Tommy interviews guests, but he isn't told who they are in advance. With hilarious consequences.

Bridget & Eamon will return for a second season, as will The Rubberbandits, with their The Rubberbandits’ Guides. Des Bishop will throw a wry eye over the issues that have exasperated the country for years in Des Bishop: This is Ireland. And Mrs Brown's Boys will be back with more Christmas specials.

    RTE2 'Documentaries'

RTÉ2 will continues to hold up a mirror to Generation Y with documentaries such as Generation What? a two-part documentary delivering a definitive picture of what makes Millennials tick.

Vogue Williams investigates the growth in body dysmorphia, drugs culture, online bullying and transgenderism in four-parter Vogue Williams - On the Edge and author Louise O’Neill tackles the issue of consent in Reality Bites: Asking for It.

    Arts

Highlights of this year’s arts programming include RTÉ One’s Painting the Nation, an eight-part search for very best amateur painter in Ireland presented by Pauline McLynn; and A Grand Design: The National Gallery Reborn, a documentary on the largest conservation and restoration project in the history of the state.

    Lifestyle

Lifestyle programming includes returning big hits Room to Improve and Celebrity Operation Transformation, as well as new lifestyle shows including Then Comes Marriage? This is a series where couples are put through a relationship bootcamp before getting hitched.

    Nathan Carter

Nathan Carter fans will be thrilled to here that the stations will air The Nathan Carter Show, a four-part music and entertainment show which will be hosted by the country singer. Nathan is a huge hit with viewers of all ages so we can see this being the first of many shows for the 26-year-old.

There are also returns for Tubs, Darcy, and Beefy, as well as Ireland's Fittest Family and Taste of Success and lots of others. There are probably more but this is what RTE have been plugging

The keeping ireland alive one looked worthy of my attention from the ad I saw the other night.

A few of those dramas look interesting.

I would guess Dancing with the Stars would be expensive to do properly. [Dancers, live band, costumes, lighting etc]. Only ever seen bits of the BBC and US versions but if they don't do it well, it will look shoddy.

Strange to do a Doc about Enda Kenny when he is still Taoiseach (just about). You generally get former colleagues and foes speaking more candidly about politicians when they have left the stage. Also, if might have to be hastily rewritten if he loses power around the time it is due to be transmitted.

UTV Ireland have lost the only programme they made themselves which got any kind of audience to RTE (Daniel and Majella). The end must be in sight for them.

Tommy Tiernan's show is promising. Since he can't prepare, a lot of the comedy will depend on his improvisation skills.

I see the Toy Show is on December 2nd - as Tubridy explained: "Christmas begins in December, not in November." (that's why he gets the big bucks, he has the finger on the pulse of the nation, and he is SO INTELLIGENT)

I liked the picture on the Indo too.

    What is "NESW SEAON"?

    You had ONE job, Ryan!

I had heard of Tiernan's show, but thought he might have landed himself in hot water after a homophobic rant he went on in the UK.

Don't know why I keep checking RTE schedules when released, it's really never going to entice me in the slightest.

A mediocre line-up all in all. That profile of Enda Kenny sounds like something from North Korean TV! The one drama that should be making a return ain't there and what is there instead looks tame and uninspired. That legal drama is probably less exciting than Clean Break.

Surprised Tiernan is getting that show.

There was a pilot shown at Christmas time and I don't see it transferring well to a multi show series.

The main joke is that he doesn't know who the person is and that can wear thin after a while.

Rte2 showed season 1 last year but not season 2 this year and season 3 is due to start in America soon.

Saw a very odd trailer promoting "Can't Cope Won't Cope" as a "new Irish drama", it seems clear however from the scenes featured that it is in fact a sitcom.

Maybe RTE think the critics will savage it given their past record in comedy if they market it as one.

Gotham is listed at No. 42 in new RTE Guide for Autumn top 50 so RTE 2 must be bringing back

They are an entire season behind the US now, such to the point that Netflix has premiered the second season in Ireland before RTE have.

They might as well have not bothered bringing it back then - and saved themselves some airgead as a result.

Yes, the economy's improving - but we're not back to the boom years just yet... ;)

Long overdue, imo. Channel 4 have shows like this for years. We've had shows about the Gardai and Dublin Fire Brigade. iirc, about the only health ones have been undercover Prime Time Investigates. Hopefully this one is unfiltered.
