Holiday home in Germany

Hi there, hoping that somebody can help me to find a good area of Germany for a self catering holiday with 3 young kids.
We have gone to France for the last few years to campsites. While we thoroughly enjoyed these holidays, we are looking for something a little quieter and also we are tired of mobile homes!
The ideal spot would be be near to a center for supplies but not too near necessarily! Also ideally there would be cycle trails near the house.
We would hope to drive there if possible as we've always driven to France. We would love a house that is safe for young kids with a decent barbecue and an area to sit outside.
Hopefully not too much of a list to ask for. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance

I have been to Koblenz in the Rhine valley (in easy reach of Cologne airport) , lots of nature around it. Would be lovely to rent a place there. Don't know about sites to rent houses from, though !

Have you had a look on Airbnb? Have used them to book Accommodation in Europe although not in Germany.

We have used the site 6/7 times and only had one issue (cleanliness) out of all of those and we were only staying there 2 nights and not cooking there so we put up with it.

We have booked again for next year for part of our trip in the UK.

Hi, I looked earlier but I just haven't a clue where I should be focusing on really. Seems to bring up a lot of apartments which I don't want. I need something with an enclosed garden/yard where they can play or have some outside time.
I did have a look at France through Air b&b and in fairness it looks good. But in much more familiar with the areas in France now.
This may sounds silly but Germany seems more difficult also because of the fact that there are no seaside resorts so just don't know where to start. I looked up lakes in Grmany but ended up even more confused!!! Maybe I'm crazy to be looking for a change from France.
My husband thinks we should drive through England and the channel tunnel so that's where this all started from really ☺️

If I were you I would decide on location first (through online research) and then have a look at Airbnb once that has been decided. If you are using a Laptop / Desktop you can filter the Search on Airbnb to exclude Apartments and look for only Houses. There are also other filters depending on your own preferences.

We are also planning to use Landbridge through the UK also with the Tunnel to get to France in 2017 but we will then be going to the Alps.

Have you though of the Netherlands? Wouldn't normally be thought of for holidays but if you're considering Germany it might be worth it.
I can't help re house renting or even distance from the channel tunnel, but last year we were in a place called Noordwijk and it was fab. The beaches are amazing and there were very long cycle tracks all along the coast. I think that wasn't even the biggest of the beach resorts so worth checking others. It was miles of beach, small town, and while it was a resort it wasn't anything like the resorts of Spain/canaries etc in summer.

I was just tagging along on a business trip and hadn't expected much because you wouldn't often hear of people having a beach holiday in Netherlands but I was very pleasantly surprised!

That sounds very interesting! The most important question is...what about the weather? I'd love to book somewhere like that. wouldn't be too far from the tunnel surely either. Mmm think its time to have a look on google at Noordwijk :))

It was summer and weather was decent, although I think a bit windy a couple of the days. Have a look at Noordwijk but check out nearby resorts too-Something in my mind is telling me there were bigger places just a short hop down the coast so worth checking!

My favourite part was the beach clubs but they might not be as good with kids - we'd left ours at home :) there were some with small playgrounds attached, but the beach clubs reminded me of what you'd imagine on the coast in America-outdoor couches, huge decks, wooden buildings serving food/drinks etc.

    Hi

I've been to Germany throughout my childhood.

I highly recommend Eckernforde or St Peter Ording. Both have beaches. Think Eckernforde my preference over St Peter Ording. I am sure there are plenty of houses to rent.

What time of year do you plan to go there? You would need to rent a car and fly to Hamburg

    Hope this helps

I am hoping to go next July/August. I've been looking up those areas and they look absolutely gorgeous. But I have one concern...I saw some people in the sea wearing wetsuits 😬😅. A bit worrying for me since I only get two weeks a year to warm my bones. Is it usually warm there during the summer? I hope I'm not seeming fussy now, I promise I'm not, but I can't compromise on the sun when we're having such awful summers for the past few years!!!

I had never heard about holidaying in the Netherlands and I am very interested.
When we go on holiday we like to walk and cycle during the day.
It is great if there is cycle paths we have gone to a few Spanish resorts also Germany and Austria so I will be check this area out.
What would be nearest airport for this area?
Also what is cost of food drinks and transport like ?
While Spain is very easy to get to from Ireland a lot of the resorts are very similar so would be interested in other areas.

    Hi Coleen,
Are there any resorts in Germany that would be suitable for young children. We like to cycle too but we need cycle paths as the children are too young for the road.

We stayed in nice towns along the Rhine like Bingen, Rudenshiem (sp!)
Koblenz and there was plenty of cycling paths off road which would suit family cycling. You can google towns on the Rhine which have cycling paths.
We did not have children with us so can't say about other things to do but food and drinks were cheap and transport.

That's great, thanks so much, that sounds like something we could do
