do you have their email or phone number on your phone/pc?

facebook matches that type of stuff in suggesting friends..
and the occasional "you are now friends" when you never confirmed it
it can be kinda awkward alright...

Ah yes. I do have their phone number for school type purposes. Our kids are in the same class.

It actually happened to me where I was scrolling through suggestions and I saw it change to friend request. I didn't touch it and just waited. Thought that I hit the button by accident but then "cancelling request" came up and I definitely didn't cancel it.

Because the request is cancelled, it doesn't show in my activity log so I have no clue how many times this has happened but I've witnessed it happening twice.

Live close, have contact details, were in same places as each other, have mutual friends, visit same websites, sleeping with neighbours wife, Facebook knows it all.

The friend suggestion is them testing if their algorithms are working correctly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,633 ✭✭✭✭Widdershins

Facebook has suggested neighbours to me and I definitely don't have their 'phone numbers or email address. I think it happens when you have FB pages in common. For example, maybe you are both members of the local GAA page on Facebook.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,504 ✭✭✭NiallBoo

It happens. I dropped my phone once and in trying to catch it sent a friend request to a stranger. We're now "friends".

You can cancel a request before it gets confirmed.

    You can unfriend people.

A less rude option is to change your privacy settings to limit what a friend can see.

Oh big deal, someone has a friend request from you, and will now see all the waffle that you post up on Facebook. How wonderful for them. If it's anything like the above, they'll be kept entertained with your wonderful witticisms.

Facebook suggests friends based on a number of things. Not limited to:

    Location.
    Groups you are part of.
    Friends you have in common.
Friends of friends you have in common.
    People with similar interests.
    and a ton more.

Woo, you sent someone a request. And they accepted. It's hardly the end of the world. And you might have made a new friend.

Did ZUCKERBURG piss in your porridge this morning too?

    I didn't send a friend request.

It didn't warn me you are sending a friend request.

I don't want the whole world knowing my business.

I only use Facebook to send photos and other communications to my family back home.

I mostly use Facebook as a news feed for stuff I'm interested in and a way to contact companies as I don't use Twitter.

I don't need nor want my neighbor as a Facebook friend and it's now made it awkward for me.

I think they should have a you know "are you sure you want to send a friend request to x?" pop up when friend request button is hit but I doubt they'd do that.

Give it a few days and just unfriend him. Happened me with a teacher in my child's class. She popped up in "People you might know", she lives locally, we'd have mutual friends. A few days later I got the "you are now friends with....". I left it about a week and unfriended her. Simple, and not awkward at all. Unless you make it so.

Do they get a notification when you unfriend them?

If you have ever emailed, whatsapped, or maybe even texted your neighbour it can often come up as suggested friends. Facebook puts contacts from other social media that you use the same email on to suggest people you'd know but arent friends with yet

If your neighbour searched your name it may have come up too

Just put them into a special group to give them limited access, then phase them out and unfriend them.

Yeah happened to me a couple of times when I had a Nokia windows phone, must have been more sensitive to touch as it's never happened since.

Facebook will also suggest someone if they have viewed your profile before, that's what usually happens when someone you vaguely know but have nothing in common with pops up as a suggestion, they were stalking you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

I have no friends on facebook at all and haven't liked any pages and everything is set to private - only set it up for a Tinder account and to set up a Facebook group page (both of which were a complete waste of time) and I used my spam (gmail) email account to set it up, so would have had no contacts in there.
Still it's asking me if I know such and such from ten or more years ago whom I would have emailed from my non-spam (gmail) email accounts. Strongly suspect gmail and facebook are in cahoots sharing my contacts info. What can you do...

Worst has to be trying to add one of those sad face likes to a tragic post and not realising until later you did a laughing face one.

When somebody becomes friends with another person it comes up on your mobile feed and there is a little plus sign on the right hand side for you t add them too. If you are scrolling with your right thumb it is very easy to accidentally add them. I've pressed it a few times.

You have to have sent a friend request inadvertently. You cannot become friends with someone on Facebook without both parties opting in. However, you can set your postings up so that the person in question does not see any of them on their news feed.
