The J1772 cable seems to have broken. I've tried our cable in a friends house and not working there. Used their cable and car charges fine. Car detects cable is inserted but doesn't charge. Anyone know if cables can just break like that?

Haven't seen an issue with a level 2 cable. However the cables supplied with the Leafs were definitely lower quality than the one BMW supplied or any of the third party ones I've bought.

These days I tend to go for self-coiling cable because they tend to be stronger and usually use better quality plugs as well.

Do you have a recommended supplier?

I bought a cable from http://www.evcables.co.uk and it seems to be decent quality.

I think www.theevcompany.com fix cables, but I'm not sure.

That's who I bought mine from at any rate.

Is there any issues/implications with using a non Nissan cable from a warranty point of view ? and have they any way of telling the a non Nissan cable was plugged in ?

Good question although the cables seem to be manufactured by third party anyway. At least there's no mention of Nissan on my current one anyway.

nope (at least unless a poor quality cable caused the issue) and nope.

For anyone interested I ended up fixing the cable. I opened the end that plugs into the car and there was a loose black wire which is the 'pilot control' wire. From what I've read this basically tells the car the start charging. Anyway I managed to reconnect the white with a bit of f trial and error. Soldering didn't work so I used a little power connector from a DVD player internals. I'll post some pics later on.

Suprised they didn't solder , I've soldered the proximity and control pilot pins before and they take solder fine ( they are cadmium plated ) now I have a better suitable hydraulic crimp tool , I crimp them as that's a better method ( in general )

The control pilot , by the way is a 1kw square wave whose duty cycle is used to convey to the car the capacity of the EVSE. ( amongst a couple of things )

I'll admit my soldering isn't the best but it just wouldn't hold.

strange , I make my own cables and the new pins take solder just fine, you do need to have an iron big enough to heat the pin ( remove the O-ring first !!)

I think that might have been the issue. I wasn't able to heat the pin. I saw a guy on YouTube filling the pin with solder then heating the pin and wire and then pushing it in. I have nowhere near that level of equipment!

Do you make and sell your cables?

NO , only for my own experiments ( and a few prototypes with friends etc )
