Are 'in house' radio DJs a dying breed?

I've noticed that so many of the big radio stations are taking on more and more TV presenters / comedians to probably increase promotion as it makes them more a 'familiar voice' to attract more listeners.
Hector, Kathryn Thomas, Al Porter, Nicky Byrne, PJ Gallagher and lots more only took to the airwaves recently in their careers.

Is there still a future for those who try to work their way up in radio alone anymore? How can they compete with someone who's already known outside in the media world?

It seems you need more that a 'face for radio' these days!

I think you have a point there.
I lot of podcasts I listen to are hosted by former radio station employees i.e. journalists, presenters etc.
They might be finding it hard to compete with the likes of which you described.
